A collection of papers at best

I am a graduate student of solid mechanics and I have read quite a few books on FEA. Of all the textbooks I have read-this is clearly the worst. The authors don't spend any time to make the material coherent and organized. They seem to have published this book just for the sake of establishing their names in the field. It is basically a collection of research papers on the subject. The worst part of the book is that the authors use excessive verbiage to describe extremely inportant concepts with little or no mathematics. This leaves the readers confused and disoriented. This book is not for those looking for an introductory text and is useless to even those experienced in the field. Avoid this book.

Another student prospective

The comments left are interesting in that all the people teaching from it find it useful, and all the students find it frustrating...there is a trend here!

I agree that the explanations are great in detail and the content practical, but at a graduate level with minimal support from the professor and no TA available, not having examples or solutions (to the odds or evens at the very least) is infuriating. After spending close to $100 for this text, I had to go out to buy another with some problems to make it through my course. Two stars for readability, will pile the other three onto the review for my other text.

If a professor recommends this book for his course, my suggestion would be to go talk to some fellow students who have already taken the course to be sure you know what you are signing up for!

Not an undergraduage text

This book was used to 'introduce' us to finite element analysis. To say the least, the book is very hard to follow. For an undergraduate text book, I don't recommend it at all. The problems are very difficult and assume you have a lot of knowledge on other subjects. Also there are close to no examples. This would be a great book for graduate classes or those seriously interested in the theory, but not for the intro introductory class, unless you have a super great professor. Because of my bad experience with the book, and how I found it difficult to grasp, I give it only two stars.

While light and easy to read

Over coffee one morning, this book was listed on my Recommendations and it caught my attention. Before I left the kitchen table that morning, I had consumed both my breakfast and this book. Both the author's story and his message intrigued me enough that before I left the kitchen table I had also reached out to Mr. Carson with an invitation to meet. After juggling schedules over email, we found ourselves across the table at a typical, locally-owned coffee shop in South Lake Union across the street from the Amazon.com headquarters.

I am naturally suspicious and skeptical. My experience with self-help books and their authors is that both tend toward the superficial and cheerleading. Mel Carson is neither. When he speaks about his book and his work, you can feel the genuine passion and interest he has to use his talents to help others with personal branding. In spite of a vast expert knowledge on personal marketing and branding, and being a draw for audiences world-wide, he is humble. He is interested in the person he is helping. The voice you read in the words of this book are not a cover; they are the author - friendly, direct, and concerned about helping you be successful.

At 39 pages, this book (paper?) is truly an introduction to personal branding. While light and easy to read, it's value to you isn't in the number of pages or words that is has, but in the many self-examination and reflection exercises in it. At first glance these exercises will appear to be simple. You may feel that you do not need to take them serious or give them much thought. I strongly caution you against submitting to those feelings. Pull out a pen and paper, give yourself time and a place to contemplate, and do the exercises with earnest. What you put into the exercises that Mr. Carson has laid out is what you will get from them in reward.

This is only an introduction. This book will give you a good foundation upon which to build your personal brand, either alone or with the help of an expert. This book is worth reading and keeping with you as you begin your journey to strengthen your personal brand.

A great introduction to the topic of branding.

As an MBA student I have become more interested in the importance of my personal brand, but I have been overwhelmed with the sheer number of article, websites, and books available on the topic. On the recommendation of a friend on Facebook, I decided to give the book a try. I am glad I did.

After an initial read I have started to outline a plan of action to create a virtual presence that will help to guide my future on-line, and off-line, professional goals. A single reading is not enough. My plan is to go back and take a minimum of 10 days to reread it; reading one section each day and reflecting how I can implement that section, and how I can develop ways to ensure that I am working to positively develop my brand.

Who knew your personal brand meant so much? Mel did. He's the one who knew. And he's doing his best to save people from themselves and their silly mistakes. This is a super clean read with many concepts and strategies that just make sense, but that you'd never come up with on your own. While this might be a book every CEO should immediately absorb, it's also extremely helpful for whatever point you are in your career. Because your personal brand is being built constantly, whether you know it or not. So you might as well follow Mel's guide and get it right from the top.

Barr and Dreeben systematically explain how instructional groups originate, form, and change over time. Focusing on first grade reading instruction, their study shows that individual reading aptitude actually has little direct relation to group reading achievement and virtually none to the coverage of reading materials once the mean aptitude of groups is taken into consideration. Individual aptitude, they argue, is rather the basis on which teachers form reading groups that are given different instructional treatment. It is these differences in group treatment, they contend, that explain substantial differences in learning curricular material.

Replete with errors but ahead of its time

The title of this book is misleading. First and foremost it is about ability grouping in the elementary grades, just one controversial aspect of how schools work. Furthermore, it is replete with methodological errors, the most damaging of which are running fairly complex manifest variable path models with, in some instances, fewer than fifty cases. And then trying to explain in substantive terms why coefficients that they expected to be statistically significant are not.

Nevertheless, for a book published in 1983, Barr and Dreeben's emphasis on the importance of aggregated contextual variables is novel, exhibiting a good deal of explanatory power. This is exactly the sort of conceptual approach one would expect from sociologists. Until recently, however, with the development of multilevel modeling, it has been difficult to find.

To their credit, Barr and Dreeben also specified a plausible mechanism for their use of group mean aptitude as a contextual variable: pace of instruction varies with group mean aptitude, and measured adchivement varies with pace of instruction.

I still have serious reservations about ability grouping and its efficacy in promoting achievement. Moreover, the obvious methodological errors in Barr and Dreeben's book are too numerous and damaging to overlook. But in one way -- use of contextual variables before their application had become commonplace -- their book is ahead of its time and shows a commitment to thinking sociologically.

Can be played seriously or as a fun party game

I played Tempus Omni at 3 AM at a convention, and I have to say it was one of the most fun tabletop role-playing experiences I've ever had in 16 years of gaming.

Why? It's because it is a game that truly brings creativity to the forefront. You feel like you are partnered with the GM more than the GM being a figure behind a curtain who calls all the shots. The story that comes about in each adventure is heavily influenced by the group you have.

The game does require the GM to be quick on their feet when it comes to story and creativity, but luckily the mechanics are simple and never get in the way.

I can see this played both seriously as a long-term tabletop game, or in a fun "one-shot" party game format. You may even find you can rope people in that do not normally play role-playing games, such as you can with a game like Fiasco.

Also, it allowed me to play a dinosaur doctor with a degree in both medicine and face-biting.

A simple time travel RPG that takes all of the unnecessary difficulty out of role playing games. I got to play this at a convention, and had a blast. For $5? More than worth it.

I played this game with a few friends of mine , the party ranged from a pict warrior , a occult psychic and a shift manager at a electronics store. We got blasted to old colonial era New Orleans and helped unlock the mysteries of the swamps and voodoo , only to be floored by what would come next. Buy this game , itll be the only table top book youll need for a long while . Buy this ! Im making my friend buy one to run his own games :)

About the Author
Donald Moores is a full professor, Senior Research Scientist, and director of the Center for Studies in Education and Human Development at Gallaudet University. He received his Ph.D. in 1967 at the University of Illinois. As director of the Center for Studies in Education and Human Development, Moores oversees research in child development, mental health, reading, and secondary education as well as his own research in psycholinguistics, learning theory and deafness. He has more than 150 publications including books, monographs, chapters, articles and proceedings and has made over 80 scholarly presentations. Honors include a research travel grant to the Soviet Union and a Fulbright Fellow Award. Most recently, he has worked as Editor of the American Annals of the Deaf.
