The lure of this book's promise starts with the assumption in its title. Possibility--that big, all-encompassing, wide-open-door concept--is an art? Well, who doesn't want to be a skilled artist, whether in the director's chair, the boardroom, on the factory floor, or even just in dealing with life's everyday situations? Becoming an artist, however, requires discipline, and what the authors of The Art of Possibility offer is a set of practices designed to "initiate a new approach to current conditions, based on uncommon assumptions about the nature of the world."

If that sounds a little too airy-fairy for you, don't be put off; this is no mere self-improvement book, with a wimpy mandate to transform its readers into "nicer" people. Instead, it's a collection of illustrations and advice that suggests a way to change your entire outlook on life and, in the process, open up a new realm of possibility. Consider, for example, the practice of "Giving an A," whether to yourself or to others. Not intended as a way to measure someone's performance against standards, this practice instead recognizes that "the player who looks least engaged may be the most committed member of the group," and speaks to their passion rather than their cynicism. It creates possibility in an interaction and does away with power disparities to unite a team in its efforts. In a lively, sensible manual for turning life's obstacles into possibilities, the Zanders introduce various "tools" for transformation, drawing on their extensive experiences with musicians, students and patients in therapy (Rosamund is a psychotherapist and painter; Benjamin is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic). In a chapter entitled "Giving an A," for example, Benjamin relates a classroom technique that allows students to envision their own futures: all students in his class receive an A if they write him a postdated letter relating "the story of what will have happened to you by next May that is in line with this extraordinary grade." Other chapters emphasize practices such as thinking in terms of making a personal "contribution" rather than stark "success or failure"; "lightening up" in order to see a problem from a new perspective (e.g., a patient of Rosamund's was able to have a sensual experience with her husband even though she was angry at him); and reassessing "frameworks for possibility" (e.g., a teacher shaved her head in order to "reframe the meaning" of a hairless class member who had leukemia). The authors' emphasis on "practice," the importance of "flow" and the joy in creation and expression is apt and often truly inspiring. Although not groundbreaking, the Zanders' suggestions constitute sound, practical advice that has much in common with Zen concepts of holism, balance and grace.

Rosamund Stone Zander is a family therapist and Benjamin Zander is the conductor for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, whom Morley Safer called "the energizer bunny of classical music" when 60 Minutes profiled him. So what are this former husband and wife doing writing a book for the Harvard Business School? Actually, Benjamin is a popular draw on the motivational seminar circuit. In his talks, he uses music and conducting as symbols for creativity and leadership, and he frequently ends a presentation with a rousing group-sing of "Ode to Joy." Instead of issuing well-worn nostrums such as "think outside the box," the pair warns that "incremental changes that lead to new ways of doing things based on old beliefs" will not result in transformation. Great Performances for Everyone!

Benjamin Zander is the conductor of The Boston Philharmonic and is well known for his orchestra's passionate performances. Rosamund Stone Zander is an executive coach, family therapist, and private practitioner who brings enormous psychological perspective to enhancing human behavior. They have written a fascinating book in which they alternate as voices in sharing principles and examples in the form of compelling stories.
They have striven to make what they share ' . . . simple, not easy.' The idea is to help you create in yourself and in others 'transformational' improvements.
They share a series of perspectives designed to improve your understanding of what and where the potential is.
First, humans tend to focus on very few things, missing most of what is going on around them. By shifting focus, you will see many opportunities for the first time. Much of this book is designed to do that for you. You will visit our old friend the nine dot square and be reminded that connecting all of the dots in four lines without lifting your writing instrument from the paper requires you to go outside the box that we mentally draw at the circumference of the dots. Be careful about your assumptions! They can fence you in!
Second, measurements can cause us to focus too narrowly on where we are today and encourage scarcity thinking -- the glass is half empty. The Zanders encourage thinking about the glass as half full, citing the well-known perspective of optimism as being empowering. This can help you 'step into a university of possibility.' I like to call this pursuing the ideal practice.
Third, if you assume that people will do well and help them see how they can, they will. Mr. Zander gives every student an A in his class, and simply requests that the student write a paper to tell what they will do to deserve the A. This gets the students focused on excellence, and takes away the tension that harms accomplishment.
Fourth, as a mindset, think of your role as 'being a contributor.' 'You are a gift to others.' How could that change what you do? As someone who thinks that way now, I find it a very useful perspective, and was glad to see it in the book.
Fifth, lead from any chair. This is a reference to involving everyone. Mr. Zander asks his players to write down how he could improve practices and peformances, and pays attention to the suggestions.
Sixth, follow rule number six. That rule is to 'lighten up.'
Seventh, be present to the ways things are. Many of us are disconnected from reality. By re-touching it, we can see more possiblities.
Eighth, give way to passion. Going with your strong feelings allows you to be more authentic, and to go to new heights of accomplishment.
Ninth, light a spark. See you role as creating a spark of possibility to be lit that others can see.
Tenth, be the board of the game you are playing. This makes it easier to see how you can make a difference.
Eleventh, create a vision that generates 'frameworks of possibility' for others. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous 'I Have a Dream' speech is cited.
Twelfth, tell the WE story. Focus on being inclusive and considering what is best for all. Move from I to We, as the Coda to the book encourages.
Each section has exercises you can use to deepen your understanding of the principles and to help you practice, in order to create greater skill.
The principles are similar to those in many other books about improving performance and creativity. What is different about the book are the unique ways that the principles are expressed, the exciting examples in beautiful stories from music and business that will be new to you (as they were to me), and the passion with which the Zanders write. I would love to hear them do this book on an audio cassette! Both do public speaking, so you may get a chance to hear them.
Can we ever get too many great inspirational stories and reminders to live up to our potential rather than our pasts? I don't think so. This book will reignite your passion for making a larger and more positive difference. It will make you more human as you do so.
After you have finished the book, consider where your passion, gifts, and influence can combine to all you to most effectively live these principles. Consider that as a calling for at least some of your leisure time. If you are lucky, you can find some way to make that a primary calling for your working hours, as well. But find that place, and spend as much time as you can there!

Worthwhile and Inspiring Read

My first impression upon picking up The Art of Possibility was that it would be "fluff." Wrong impression. Instead, this turned out to be a very powerful book that I'm glad to have read. The Zanders present a philosophy and strategy for seeing and living in our world from a standpoint of possibility rather than scarcity and restriction. They describe a set of practices that may sound trite from their chapter headings ("Giving an A") but which are backed up by lucid explanations and very moving anecdotes. (I don't usually go for books that rely so heavily on personal stories, but in this case they are quite inspiring and contribute significantly to the power of the book.)
The two authors come at the issues of leadership and personal growth from different perspectives: He from the point of view of an orchestra conductor, and She from that of a psychotherapist. Benjamin Zander fortunately does not try to make the threadbare comparison that being a conductor is like being a CEO; rather, he simply uses his personal experiences as a leader to help make his points with interesting examples related to his career as conductor.
It's a worthwhile read (and easy, too, at 200 pages) that at the very least is inspiring and enjoyable, but also likely to make positive changes in your life if you apply the practices the authors describe.

Change your perspective, change your life

I bought this book on someone's recommendation, but it just sat on my shelf for a few months until Tom Peters mentioned the Zanders in one of his newsletters. I read his interview with them on his web site, went home, and read their book through in one sitting. It starts off unpromisingly: the first couple of chapters are brief and, I felt, rather platitudinous. But then the authors started illustrating their points with anecdotes, and it all became clear to me. Recognizing your assumptions and how they limit you, and being willing to expand your thinking beyond them to new possibilities, makes a major difference in how you deal with the challenges in your life. I also liked their positive approach -- too many of us get entrapped in "something's broken about me and I need to fix it." The Zanders are certainly not the first to articulate this point of view, but I felt that their illustrative examples made it much easier to understand. But you do have to THINK about what their stories imply; they don't give you "step 1, step 2" instructions on how to apply this philosophy to your own life. The book has already given me a different perspective on several aspects of my behavior that had been troubling me, and on that basis alone I'd recommend it to anyone.

I have the orginal limited to 1275 copy of this book it is interesting to anyone who wants to understand the insanity of the witch hunt in this country and europe.The author desribes in detail the way one was tested to be a witch and the vocabulary is plain and easy to understand for all.A must for all occult collectors!

the mind of an inquisitor

Henry Boguet would have been considered an intellectual in his time; ironically, he was also intellectually crippled by his faith. This is a phenomenon that we still often see over 400 years later: the devout embedded within spiritual communities that provide intense emotional comfort at tragic intellectual cost. Tune into any political talk show and you'll see the fallacious reasoning employed by Boguet still being used today. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in medieval (and modern) thought!

A Fascinating Foray into Witchery!

From early in his preface, Boguet linked witches and other magical manifestations with the strange and wonderful: "Now I do not gainsay that the stories told of witches are very strange; for there is matter for much wonder ..." In this case, wonder for Boguet encompassed many qualities ranging from the standard crimes of which witches were accused-attending the Sabbath, practicing maleficia, making a pact with the Devil, and changing shapes-to the more atypical aspects, such as the Franc-comtois werewolves and zombies. His witches and witchcraft were thus broad categories, acting as catchall terms for what he perceived as abnormal and perverse.

This is an absolutely indispensible read for the Occult or Wiccan Scholar!

i was looking for a book that has esoteric diseases. This isn't it. I read about 15 cases and didn't learn a thing from them so i stopped reading. This book may be useful for medical students but not for a nephrology fellow or practicing nephrologist.

About the Author
Kerry J. Daly (Ph.D., Sociology, McMaster University) is a full professor in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph.  In over a decade of teaching a graduate course on qualitative methods, he has had students from his own interdisciplinary department as well as students from Psychology, Sociology, Nursing and Nutrition, thus sensitizing him to the many different values and procedures that exist across the varied audiences and disciplines that contribute to family studies.  With Jane Gilgun and Gerald Handel, he co-edited the book "Qualitative Methods in Family Research" (Sage 1992), and he has authored a number of articles focusing on qualitative methodology in journals such as "Qualitative Inquiry," "The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography," "Symbolic Interaction," and "Journal of Marriage & Family."  He co-authored the chapter on qualitative research methods in Leon Kuczynski's "Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations (Sage 2003).  He was recipient of the Anselm Strauss Award for the best qualitative research article in 2001.  He was a member of the Steering Committee for the Qualitative Family Research Network, then Chair for 3 years and served for a period as Editor of the Qualitative Family Research newsletter.  His teaching, research, and professional background combine to offer the perfect combination for undertaking this new text.

Informative and Scholarly

This book is a must-have for family scholars and qualitative researchers in general. It provides new and experienced researchers with a clear and thorough review of the principles behind qualitative research in the Chicago School tradition and also provides excellent guidelines for how to do qualitative research. Professor Daly is particularly strong on ethics, which is a huge issue in qualitative research. He also provides a model of how to be reflexive in the conduct of qualitative research. Read this book and you will be informed and read to do excellent work yourself.

Paul Conroy is a former British soldier. As a photographer and filmmaker whose work spans 15 years, he has reported on the conflicts in Iraq, Congo, Kosovo, Libya, and Syria.

Q&A with author Paul Conroy

1.     How do you settle the tension between covering situations like the one in Homs, Syria and leaving your family behind?
My family has been incredibly supportive of my career as a photojournalist covering conflict. That isn’t to say they haven’t suffered in many ways. It’s a very fine line to walk and, has in many ways, had a very detrimental effect on my relationships. My family understands the reasons I do such work, and my children have grown up watching me pack bags and disappear for months on end but, with every war it gets harder for both them and me. However, after a few months back at home they, rather cheekily, ask, “What are you still doing here?” I know they are proud of what I do and I hope that I have instilled in them the curiosity to question the accepted norms and never to accept anything at face value, especially war.

2.     When working with other journalists such as Marie Colvin, you all witness first-hand the horrors of war. How do you prevent yourselves from becoming entirely disheartened? What drives you forward?
When Marie and I arrived in Homs at the height of the Syrian armies bombardment of the town, we both agreed that it was the worst shelling we had ever witnessed. It is those extremes that push you forward; neither of could walk away from the situation. It was mass slaughter and it simply reminded us of what we did and why we were there. On the night before Marie’s death we were both shivering, wrapped in our blankets whilst undergoing continual artillery bombardment, when Marie turned to me and asked, “If you weren’t being paid would you still be here,” “Of course,” I replied. She simply smiled saying, “I knew you would say that.” Even at that point we believed we could make a difference.

3.     What made you decide to write this book? Was your experience in Syria something you always knew you would ultimately write about?
I had never considered writing a book about Syria. When I set off it was just another job—I was there to take pictures as part of a team. I’m not sure I even took a pen. It was only when I was back in London that the idea for a book came up, and I was lucky enough to be asked to write about it when my agent Annabel Murello approached me. I was on a lot of heavy-duty painkillers at the time and thought it would be a good thing to do. I had a very large hole in my leg and I thought it wise to do something.

4.     Was it difficult for you to revisit your experiences with Marie in Syria as you wrote this book? Or did you find it a cathartic experience?
On the whole I found it a very cathartic process. I relived every minute of the whole assignment in great detail, forcing myself to remember every moment in order to avoid burying memories that may come back to bite me in the future. Over the course of writing the book, I took great comfort in the fact that I was bringing Marie back to life for potential readers. It was as if, for a just few months, she was back with me. I would laugh out loud at her jokes and titter to myself as I remembered her quirks and foibles. The worst part was writing the chapter when the house was attacked and Marie and Remi were killed. For months I had them back with me but, inevitably, in my mind I now had to kill them again. I put it of for a week or two, but one morning I woke and wrote that chapter in one sitting.
In many ways writing the book was was like a gentle letting go of Marie, a long but sad farewell, not the short brutal horror in the ruins of Baba Amr where I never h

War. It terrifies us. It freezes our very souls. Yet, through our better angels, it can call us to bear witness to its inhumanity and speak out against the carnage while giving voice to those silenced by the vacuum of destruction and death through words and images. Great story, terrible book.

I don't often write reviews but in this case I felt I had to offer a balance to the baffling amount of 5 star reviews this book received, because a couple of chapters in I was annoyed that I'd been encouraged by them. I can only imagine they were given by friends and family of the author.

Here's the thing: Under The Wire is a great story but a terrible book. It's difficult to criticise it without feeling mean-spirited because Paul Conroy is undoubtedly a brave and well meaning guy. But Paul is a photographer not a writer and that fact becomes apparent very early in. To be fair the blame for how bad this book is has to be shared 50/50 with whoever is supposed to have edited it.

Here's a quick run down:

Pros:
- Clever jumping back and forth through time and places to build up back story.
- A gritty insight into the horrors of modern day war.
- The story of brave people trying to do the right thing.

Cons:
- Utterly dreadful childishly bad writing that distracts from what should be a compelling story.
- Paul "constantly" "tirelessly" "frequently" overuses adverbs that break up the flow of the narrative.
- There's no insight into the repercussions of Marie Colvin's death.
- I don't believe any conversation in this book happened as described. For some bizarre reason, when people talk to each other, they all call the person they're talking to by their first name. EVERY time. EVERY person. EVERY conversation.
"Paul do you think it's safe here?"
"Marie I don't know what to say"
"Wa'el how are you?"
"Paul I'm fine today"
"Marie we are getting into the car now"
"Paul I'm good"
(Not actual conversations from the book!) It's completely jarring and irritating and ruins the flow every time.

- Just bad bad writing, trying to be poetic with incomprehensible descriptions. Childishly bad stuff:

Here's an actual paragraph from page 177:
"We continued on our cross-country route as the sun bade us it's daily farewell. Slowly, with the silent and stealthy movement of a cat stalking it's prey, we were robbed of vision. Night fell upon us and with the darkness came the fear. It wrapped its invisible tentacles silently around all of us in the vehicle. No one spoke. The night belonged to the hunter and the hunted."

Page 253:
"What?" I replied in shock. The news was like a smack in the face, so powerful we're the words that tumbled from their lips."

Page 277:
"I'm sure I could have dismissed the whole affair as a rather quirky dream. Sadly, this wasn't the case and, just when I thought I had seen it all, there was more to come."

- Weird continuity errors: on one page he's walking down the street in winter, a few paragraphs later he's talking about how it's an autumn day.
- Constant childish talk about how much he loves cigarettes. There's "lovely" cigarettes in every chapter. Rarely have anything to do with the story, he just likes taking about cigarettes. A lot.

To sum up: Paul is a great guy, a brave photographer and an admirable human being but he is one of the worst writers I have ever read and this a painfully bad book to read. It's an amazing story but it should have been written by someone else. Ultimately the editor/publisher has a lot to answer for, bad editing and shameful use of Marie Colvin's name to sell Paul's bad writing. Absolutely not a 5 star book.

Incredible true account of a personal as well as a national tragedy tempered by the strength of the human spirit

A good friend of mine, familiar with the Syrian situation recommended this book & told me to buy it. I'm so glad she did. A narrative that grabs you from the first page & does not let go at all. A true modern adventure showing the best and worst of the human spirit. Read it and open your eyes . Do yourself a favour !!

Printing WAY too small

I was looking forward to reading this book because I knew it had been a famous series, and I wanted to enjoy it first hand. I like the idea of miniaturization stories. Only trouble was, I was disappointed to find that the print of the book had been made so small that I found it disappointing because it was simply too small to read comfortably. True, I was able to read it as long as I did so with a magnifying glass in one hand, which I ultimately found to be tiresome at 2 am. With bigger print, this book would be great! As it is, I could never recommend it without the warning I have posted here. I wish a kindle edition could have been made available. In my kindle, I can control the size of the print.
