From Publishers Weekly
In his ninth novel, K'Wan (Gangsta; Road Dawgz) continues his popular Hood Rat series, with yet more of what his readers expect: action, murder, betrayal, sex, more action, familiar faces and a few surprises. Readers are first introduced to Tionna, a single mom of two, desperate to recover her footing after her man gets arrested for his involvement in drug and gun dealing. Moving back to her old neighborhood in shame, Tionna devises a plan with her girlfriends—Gucci, Boots and Tracy—to con local record label mogul Don B. Meanwhile, Gucci meets and falls for Animal, a notorious criminal who's on the fence about going legitimate as a rapper. As their pursuits intertwine, Tionna and friends find much to learn about unintended consequences. Quick and entertaining, K'wan's latest captures a small slice of modern urban life with a great degree of credibility and finds in Animal his most conflicted, memorable and likable character yet. Unfortunately, the plot hinges on some implausible (and cheesy) developments, which may try readers' patience. (Oct.)

Too Many Characters
By Romello $
Well the book started off slow and then all these characters from his past novels started popping up. Took me awhile to remember most of them. Shai Clark i definitely know from Hoodlum my favorite K'Wan book. I personally feel there were too many characters. I liked it but was expecting so much more. Now i have to wait what another year before K'wan comes out with another joint. I hope his next work is a page turner.

K'wan Reigns Supreme
By AndreaDenise
Section 8, the latest and greatest by K'wan, boasts similar elements found in his previous "hood" tales. He effortlessly addresses many of the issues faced by many living in the inner cities today: drug abuse, promiscuity and violence.

Tionna is presently stuck between a rock and a hard place. The man of her dreams is currently doing time. Duhan expects Tionna to hold him down, while he attempts to beat his case, all the while knowing that Tionna is penniless and barely able to care for their two children.

She's prepared to "ride" for her man until she meets Don B., CEO of Big Dawg Entertainment. Assuming he's the answer to her prayers, Tionna swiftly discovers he's her worst nightmare.

Gucci, Tionna's best friend, knows she's a dime piece and dares anyone, male or female, to think otherwise. This likable character has been down for Tionna through thick and thin. When Gucci finally meets someone whom she finds fascinating, she fears she may lose him before they have the chance to become acquainted.

Multifaceted, Tayshawn a/k/a Animal can't seem to leave the pandemonium of the streets behind. This gifted storyteller is granted an opportunity to become the newest and hottest rapper on the scene. Will his loyalty to Tech, his partner in crime, hinder Animal from exiting the streets indefinitely?

Along with a spectacular plot and plausible characters, K'wan unveils his comedic side with the introduction of Ronnie, Gucci's mother. She's a no-nonsense, blunt smoking woman who's been around the block ... several times. She dishes out advice, much to the dismay of Gucci and her friends, yet she does so in a humorous way.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this novel. Section 8 merits a perfect rating of five stars. I believe it's his finest work thus far.

Not as good as his norm
By CDez
The book started out slow for me. I learned new characters, then had to relearn the old characters, which was frustrating for me. I did love the mixing of characters new and old. But there were some blips. In this book, Jah, Yoshi, Lou Loc, and Gutter were supposedly real, fellow New Yorkers...LEGENDS!! But then, one of the characters is reading the book "Gutter." A little slip, I guess. The book was typical K'wan. Once it took off, it was great until the end. I'm hanging on for the next one. And for those of us who aren't New Yorkers and aren't familiar with the slang, you can sometimes get lost. I was a good book overall and I'd buy it again!

Review
"It's always with confidence and joy that I recommend Wayne Mack's books. He's so thorough and so thoroughly biblical that, when you read them, you know you've just spent valuable time with our Lord and His powerful Word." --Elyse Fitzpatrick, author and counselor

"Sometimes a book reads you while you are reading it. This is that kind of book. It has eyes!" --Jim Elliff, President of Christian Communicators Worldwide

"Wayne and Joshua Mack do an excellent job of diagnosing the cancer of pride and providing inspired biblical treatment. With the scalpel of Scripture, they carefully do surgery on the reader's soul. Drawing wisdom from biblical examples and great preachers of the past, they offer practical instruction for extracting pride and replacing it with its counterpart—humility." --Jack Hughes, Senior Pastor, Calvary Bible Church, Adjunct Professor of Homiletics at The Master's Seminary

Deeply Challenging!
By Tim Challies
As I read Humility by Wayne Mack I could not help but draw comparisons with C.J. Mahaney's excellent book by the same title. I am glad to say that both books are deeply challenging and saturated in Scripture. Both men are skilled expositors of Scripture and both have a heart for the church. While I will go so far as to recommend both of these books I do not wish to make further comparison between them as each stands on its own merits.

"This book was written," says Mack, "in an attempt to understand pride and humility from a biblical perspective and to help us diminsh the destructive pride factor and to increase the true humility factor in our lives." To do this the author uses a "four-D" approach. He begins with biblical definitions of pride and humility and then discusses how pride and humility display themselves. Finally, he explains how true humility can be developed and destructive pride can be diminished in the life of the believer.

The importance of this topic can hardly be overstated. The Scriptures make it clear to us that humility is an exceedingly important aspect of the Christian's character. The Bible continually exhorts God's people to be humble and to rid ourselves of all pride. We are often told that God pours out his blessing on those who display a humble heart. Pride strikes right to the heart of God as it is a proclamation on the part of a person that he considers his concerns to be more important than submission to his Creator. "Pride consists in attributing to ourselves the honor, privileges, prerogatives, rights and power that are due to God alone. Thus, it is the very root and essence of sin because pride, at its core, is idolatry of self. A proud person has put himself or herself in God's place."

Humility stands exactly opposed to pride. "Humility consists in an attitude wherein we recognize our own insignificance and unworthiness before God and attribute to Him the supreme honor, praise, prerogatives, rights, privileges, worship, devotion, authority, submission, and obedience that He alone deserves... It means having a servant's mind-set and always putting self last."

At the conclusion of each chapter is a set of questions of application and sometimes a self-evaluation. While I generally eschew this type of evaluation and have often found them to be somewhat less than useful, I found the questions in Humility to be challenging and relevant to the topic. They were a welcome addition and added significant value to the book.

While I enjoyed the book tremendously there were two areas that I considered negative. First, the author's definition of pride did not seem to allow for any level of pride whatsoever. Is there anything inherently evil with feeling proud of, for example, one's child? I would not think so, provided that one acknowledge his own and his child's dependence on God. Yet I am not sure that this would fit within Mack's definition of pride. He says also of humility that "As soon as we think we are humble, we're not; as soon as we think we have it, we've lost it." I am not entirely sure that this is the case. If a man may acknowledge other gifts given to him by God, could he not also acknowledge his own humility? Secondly, while I appreciate the usefulness and even necessity of reading the contributions of great Christians of days past, I felt that Mack may have relied a little too much on their writing. For example, the book concludes with fully five pages of an excerpt of one of Charles Spurgeon's sermons.

These are but small complaints. I enjoyed Humility and, far more importantly, was continually challenged and edified in reading it. Just days after reading the book I can already attest to some changes I have made and will continue to make in my life because of what I learned through its pages. Because of the importance of the topic this is a book that will benefit all who read its pages. I recommend that you do so!

Remind Me Once More, Please
By Jacques Schoeman
'The path to true humility begins with the new birth. The Bible makes it clear that no unsaved person can be truly humble. The beginning of true humility then, is the awareness of our total depravity that comes with the initial work of the Holy Spirit in salvation.' p 123

The book focuses on the lost art of humility, one that can never be overstated too much, or repeated enough. To use an example, to continually speak of the fruit of virtue, but decline to ever apologize, seek repentance or ask forgiveness when one transgresses against his brothers, are indications of sure-footed pride.

The battle against pride is one we all should take up - repentance is surely the most sure way of dealing with this?

'Our pride wars against the admission that there is no good in us. Our sinful condition forever struggles with our total dependence on grace.' B Chapell, Christ-Centered Preaching p 105

Dr Mack writes that as a witness to pagan kings of God's sovereignty, Daniel's greatest service was to point out the excessive pride of King Nebuchadnezzar, and reveal God's coming judgment upon it. pp. 100-3

Essential to read
By douglas van antwerp
The best and only good book on humility. I've searched on Amazon for a long time before I found this book. The author is a pastor
in a church.
He really explores humility and pride in depth. He's very thorough. Examples of pride: a violent, argumentative, or critical person.
He identifies ways you can be prideful that I've never thought of, and then presents ways you can develop humility in yourself.
Important that every Christian read and apply this book. The book is just that good.

National Book Award Finalist. How did humanity originate and why does a species like ours exist on this planet? Do we have a special place, even a destiny in the universe? Where are we going, and perhaps, the most difficult question of all, "Why?"

In The Meaning of Human Existence, his most philosophical work to date, Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson grapples with these and other existential questions, examining what makes human beings supremely different from all other species. Searching for meaning in what Nietzsche once called "the rainbow colors" around the outer edges of knowledge and imagination, Wilson takes his readers on a journey, in the process bridging science and philosophy to create a twenty-first-century treatise on human existence―from our earliest inception to a provocative look at what the future of mankind portends.

Continuing his groundbreaking examination of our "Anthropocene Epoch," which he began with The Social Conquest of Earth, described by the New York Times as "a sweeping account of the human rise to domination of the biosphere," here Wilson posits that we, as a species, now know enough about the universe and ourselves that we can begin to approach questions about our place in the cosmos and the meaning of intelligent life in a systematic, indeed, in a testable way.

Once criticized for a purely mechanistic view of human life and an overreliance on genetic predetermination, Wilson presents in The Meaning of Human Existence his most expansive and advanced theories on the sovereignty of human life, recognizing that, even though the human and the spider evolved similarly, the poet's sonnet is wholly different from the spider's web. Whether attempting to explicate "The Riddle of the Human Species," "Free Will," or "Religion"; warning of "The Collapse of Biodiversity"; or even creating a plausible "Portrait of E.T.," Wilson does indeed believe that humanity holds a special position in the known universe.

The human epoch that began in biological evolution and passed into pre-, then recorded, history is now more than ever before in our hands. Yet alarmed that we are about to abandon natural selection by redesigning biology and human nature as we wish them, Wilson soberly concludes that advances in science and technology bring us our greatest moral dilemma since God stayed the hand of Abraham.

Review
“A valedictory work… What a lively writer Mr. Wilson can be. This two time winner of the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction stands above the crowd of biology writers the way John le Carré stands above spy writers. He’s wise, learned, wicked, vivid, oracular.” (Dwight Garner - New York Times Book Review)

“In his typically elegant style, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Wilson (Letters to a Young Scientist) cannily and candidly probes the nature of human existence.” (Publishers Weekly)

“This illustrious book collects all 160 photographs of renowned abolitionist Frederick Douglass and astutely places Douglass’s personal interest in photography into the context of his career and legacy…. This study provides a multifaceted, unique look at one of the most influential figures of American history.” (Publishers Weekly)

“This stunning volume presents 160 photographs, some for the first time, and they not only follow Douglass throughout his life but also place him within the times he lived…. Stauffer, Zoe Trodd, and Celeste-Marie Bernier point out that Douglass saw the truth-telling aspects of photography and how it could be used as a tool in the fight against slavery, as photos both humanized African Americans and revealed the horrors of their enslavement. This tour de force is a must-have that will enhance history and reference collections.” (Patricia Ann Owens - Library Journal, Starred review)

“E. O. Wilson is Darwin’s great successor, a scientist of such astounding breadth, depth, experience, and brilliance that he offers us nothing less than a new understanding of humanity… You will see the beauty, mystery, and possibilities of human existence through the eyes of one of humanity’s greatest and most intrepid explorers.” (Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University)

“[A] tough-minded little primer-cum-manifesto… Compact and readable.” (Dan Cryer - Boston Globe)

“There can be few better guides through our species’ past journey and potential for the future… A provocative and beautifully written collection of essays.” (Tim Lenton - Nature)

“No biologist has been more persistent or eloquent in correcting our misapprehensions about human origins than Edward O. Wilson… We should be grateful that Wilson, so late in his illustrious career, still appeals to reason and imagination in hopes of enlightening us about our nature and inspiring us to change our destructive ways.” (Scott Russell Sanders - Washington Post)

“Wilson asks: Does humanity have a special place in the universe? Where are we going, and why? He answers by telling science’s latest creation stories, and presenting a vision of the future both inspiring and plausible, not an easy feat to pull off… Wilson is both a wild-eyed optimist and a hard-nosed realist. What more can we ask of a prophet?” (John Horgan - Scientific American)

An epic (and very comforting) scientific creation narrative
By B. Case
"The Meaning of Human Existence," by Edward O. Wilson, is an extraordinary book: audacious, illuminating--and in the end, oddly comforting. How could it not be with a subject and title so outrageously brazen? Written by one of the most honored and preeminent living biologists, and at the pinnacle of his life, this is an exceptionally personal book. It is a synthesis and distillation of all the big who-are-we ideas he's put together from a lifetime of scientific research and personal experience. You might call it a highly personal philosophical anthropology. But more accurately, it's a scientific creation narrative about how we came to be what we are, what makes us special in the cosmos, and how we can use that specialness to improve our future.

I downloaded this book the day it was published and devoured it over the course of the next two days. Now, a few days later, I am still basking in the satisfying glow and deep comfort of that extraordinary experience.

The book pleased me not because it offered any major new scientific concepts or ideas. In fact, I found I was already quiet familiar with nearly all of the science presented in the book. If you've read Wilson's other bestselling books, and you're reasonably well-read in the fields of prehistory, evolutionary biology, cultural anthropology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and comparative religions, then you, too, will find little new here. What was beautiful and remarkable was how the author was able to weave these many big concepts together to form a stunning tapestry of truth, a new science-based creation narrative.

In this book, Wilson recounts his personal scientific take on the epic journey of human evolution. Wilson focuses that journey heavily on his recent groundbreaking thesis about the importance of human eusociality (see his "The Social Conquest of Earth"). The book also touches briefly on the latest scientific knowledge concerning instinct, the biology of religion, free will, and consciousness. As an important side note--yet given a whole chapter of its own--the author makes it clear that in the greater scheme of things, it is "microbes that rule the Galaxy." For me, the most entertaining and enlightening chapter was the one entitled, "Portrait of E. T." In that chapter, the author speculates--based on scientific theory--about the characteristics he would expect from any "human-grade aliens on Earth-like planets." He gives us eight characteristics; taken together, they form a startling and eye-opening portrait, one significantly different from that we currently see in most science fiction.

Finally, the book celebrates the dual importance of the humanities in addition to the sciences as the joint hallmarks of human achievement. He makes a point that if intelligent aliens were ever to contact earth, they would probably be far less interested in our science than our arts and humanities. After all, if they were to contact us, it is obvious that we would have little knowledge about science that they would not already know. It is our amazing accumulation of cultural heritage that would fascinate and thrill them.

In closing, it would be an enormous oversight if I failed to note what a sublime pleasure it always is to read Wilson's clear, thoughtful, eloquent and exquisite prose. I will be deeply saddened if this turns out to be his last book.

Eloquence without conclusion
By Newton Munnow
I've read many of E.O. Wilson's books. None have stunned me in the same way as when I first read 'On Human Nature' but 'The Meaning of Human Existence' boasts a big title for what is, essentially, an echo of many of his past works. When Wilson sticks to science, he's as sharp and eloquent as ever. When he veers to philosophical guesswork, as in his chapter on Extraterrestrial Life, he's a lot less convincing.

While I liked the idea of visiting ETs being more concerned with the humanities than our scientific discoveries (they'd have reached the same scientific conclusions independent of human input) I wasn't convinced by Wilson's projections of what they might look like. I'm not sure there was any point in including such a chapter. In a book that should have been marshaling facts and arguments it felt like a less than amusing detour.

One of Wilson's main points remains that the internal conflict in human conscience is a result of thousands of years of trying to balance individual selection against group selection. In other words, selfishness is (to an extent) natural for each of us. But at the point it affects the group you belong to, it weakens that group. If it weakens it too much, adios to your entire group and goodbye to your gene pool. The rallying cry he concludes with, for humans to share enough knowledge to remember that they are part of life on earth rather than the point of life on earth, is a vital one. Fight ignorance, ask the right questions, catalog the answers - it's vintage Wilson. There are no breadcrumbs here thrown to the religious and Wilson's punches still hit home after all these years.

patchwork
By Avid reader
The most ambitious thing about this relatively short book seems to be its title. Wilson fans will quickly discover that there is nothing really new here. On the contrary, it struck me to be a collection of set pieces that are not even carefully edited (as can be seen by the fact that several explanations and descriptions occur--almost verbatim--in several places).

Wilson, one of the founding fathers of sociobiology, sees not only the biological make up of mankind but also its cultural creativity shaped by the accidental developments of its evolutionary history. Thus our morality arose out of the conflicting pressures of individual selection (sin) versus group selection (virtue), our love of stories and literature, our delight in music, our sense of religious awe all exist because they provided evolving man with advantages in his existence as successful hunter-gatherer. For Wilson a phenomenon (be it biological or cultural) is explained in its meaning as soon as its evolutionary advantage for mankind has been explained, a view shared by few proponents or practitioners of the humanities. Where he seems to run into problems, however, is when it comes to deciding whether what was advantageous to hunter-gatherers can still be considered to be advantageous to the evolutionary future of mankind. Here Wilson decides to have it both ways. On the one hand, he firmly believes that it would be a mistake to fiddle with the biological make up of man's nature (p.60)--though he is quite willing to consider some drastic social engineering, which he himself admits "sounds 'fascist'" but "can be deferred for another generation or two" (p.137). Small comfort!

When he comes to the evolutionary advantages of man's culture, on the other hand, he is quite eager to pick and choose right now. Religion he considers evolutionary baggage (a form of antiquated, blood-shedding cultural tribalism) that should be tossed sooner rather than later. (But how about the intra- and inter-tribal blood-letting Darwin in his "The Descent of Man" considers so beneficial for the human evolution of the fittest? Nothing wrong with that? Nietzsche in fact blames the Christian religion for trying to stifle this beneficial blood-letting with its unnatural morality of love. Who occupies the high ground here?) But let's go on: Philosophy (excluding Daniel Dannett!)is not far behind in the general house cleaning: "The history of philosophy when boiled down consists mostly of failed models of the brain" (p. 161). Our belief in free will is of course also an illusion but "necessary for sanity and thereby for the perpetuation of the human species" (170). That illusion can stay! Other cultural activities are viewed favorably. Their creativity is admired as long as it does not interfere with the progress of a rational world view. The book ends with Wilson's fervent hope that we can, with the help of "technoscientific" progress emerge from our human "childhood" (does this include our playmates Plato, Dante, Shakespeare, Mozart et al.?) into an age of peace, mutual understanding and preserved biodiversity. All of this sounds so awfully pat, so depressingly reductionist. Is this the wisdom for the future? It seems such awfully pale, one-dimensional stuff. Is it really so reasonable to toss out the wisdom of our past cultural experiences for this kind of rationalistic fundamentalism?

The best chapters, in my opinion, are those (in the middle section of the book) where Wilson can show with his usual mastery of detail the complexities of non-human life forms (his favorite ants, animal and plant lives in their dependence on smells, the rule of microbes in the galaxy.) I wish he would have gone on and on! The realities he describes seem so much richer, more fertile, more complex, more mysterious than the seemingly "enlightened" conclusions he establishes for the meaning of human existence. These seem to belong--as the author Marilynne Robinson phrased it in another context--to "a new upsurge of that famous Western rationalism, old enemy of reasonableness, always so right at the time, always so shocking in retrospect."

Confessions Of A Cutter: A True Story of Sexual Abuse, Self Mutilation, and Recovery, by Lisa Verde

In this shockingly candid memoir, award-winning writer Lisa Verde exposes the truth about her personal journey with self mutilation. She details the years of childhood sexual abuse, humiliation, and neglect that finally led to the spontaneous revelation that cutting and burning herself would keep her tethered to reality.

In a boldly convention-defying analysis, Verde asserts that burning and cutting herself from age 11 to 19 was a strong self-administered therapy that ultimately saved her sanity and her life.

As she writes: "I wanted to die, but more than that, I wanted to not die."

This work of non-fiction represents the very intimate struggle of one girl's journey into womanhood and wellness, through the personal struggle for courage and sanity.

Approximately 12,500 words, or 45-60 minutes of reading time.

Very emotional but amazing read. Being a past cutter myself, I definitely related to a lot of this. Will definitely reread from time to time!

it was true
By s. wilkie
The reason I liked this book was how accurate it was. The feelings. The times of cutting. What it was like to be in a mental hospital. The only thing I didn't like was the writing style. It was ok, but it was more informational than anything.

Horrible Representation of a True Addiction
By Nessa
I was absolutely disgusted and disappointed in this book. The fact that she states that the things she's read seem to trivialize cutting, then states that she got over it herself, does just that - makes it seem more simple than it is. Cutting IS an addiction. It's one that I spent time in a treatment center for. Yes, it's as a result of other circumstances & mental illnesses, but it's an addiction, much like drugs or alcohol. People DON'T just stop after adolescence as she suggests at the end (I'd like to know where she gets her facts) and not wanting to talk about it doesn't help to make a topic like cutting any less taboo. In fact, if she did her research, she'd see that yes, it does impact adolescents and young adults the most, but it doesn't end there are plenty of adults, and even the elderly, that self-harm. It may not be in the form of cutting all the time, but self-harm is self-harm. The fact that she proudly states it was "absolutely the right thing to do" is incredibly irresponsible, as if you can only get through a situation successfully with a coping mechanism so destructive. To say she was selfish and self-indulgent for going through this "phase" does an injustice to those who actually suffer with this addiction. It IS beyond their control & implying that it makes them selfish or self-indulgent doesn't do justice to the fact that most self-harm addicts (but apparently not her) try to hide their wounds & scars so that they DON'T impact others. It's a disease of secrets, not bragging and "trophies" as she likes to portray. People in these situations aren't standing around letting people put cigarettes out on them. They're hiding these issues, not flaunting them. When she implies that the more normal she acted, the more normal she became, I lost all respect for what she was trying to do with this book. There's a reason that there's such a stigma around mental illnesses and addictions and this book does nothing but enforce it. People truly in these situations get told all the time to "act normal" or that it's "just a phase" and that's NOT true. These are serious problems with serious consequences that CAN be helped (not cured) with the proper help and work. It's not to say the person will always be "sick" or a "victim" or anything, but it's certainly not as easy as acting normal. I feel like this should've been kept as a diary, maybe shared at a 12 step meeting or with a therapist, but not publicized in a manner that makes others see "look, act normal & it goes away! You too can live a life wrapped in a pretty bow!" I DO have high hopes for my future. I AM on the road to recovery. I'm outside of the "adolescent" category at 26, but I can say without a doubt that I STILL struggle with those urges daily when triggered. It's not as simple as she makes it seem & her story is just that, her story. It doesn't do justice to break the stigmas that surround the thousands who actually do struggle with this addiction.

Malachi: A Handbook on the Hebrew Text (Baylor Handbook on the Hebrew Bible), by Terry W. Eddinger

In this newest installment to the Baylor Handbook on the Hebrew Bible series, Terry Eddinger provides a practical guide for students and teachers working through the Hebrew text of Malachi. Eddinger addresses the grammatical and syntactical issues within the final book of the minor prophets, while drawing out the larger narrative of the text through analysis of how words and phrases function in larger clauses and paragraphs. Taking the work of translation and interpretation one step further, Malachi follows the poetic prose of the book's catechetical dialogue in order to provide greater understanding of the prophet's specific literary structure. Including chapter-specific keywords and an exhaustive linguistic glossary, Eddinger provides a valuable resource for all to better capture the meaning inherent in this underutilized book.

A worthy guide through the Hebrew text of Malachi
By Abram Kielsmeier-Jones
The Baylor Handbook on the Hebrew Bible series is a deliberately unique contribution to the field of commentaries on the Hebrew Bible. It fills a void. Although the student of the Hebrew of the minor prophets is fortunate to perhaps be able to access Baker's fine exegetical commentary (Malachi is in this volume), there is still a dearth in general of OT commentaries that comment extensively on the Hebrew text and grammar. In that sense I've been happy to see the careful attention this series gives to the Hebrew text. (Bonus: this book and some the others in the series that I've briefly glanced through give good treatment of discourse analysis.)

It's important to note from the outset that Malachi (as a book in this series) is not a "full blown commentary" (Holmstedt). It's a "Handbook on the Hebrew Text," which does "not attempt to replace the second step of consulting commentaries and secondary literature...." In keeping with this aim, Terry W. Eddinger gives the reader a short (five pages) introduction, yet it is plenty to be able to work well with the Hebrew text of Malachi. (And a bibliography with references throughout points readers in the direction of other Malachi-related literature.)

One commendable feature is the "key words" chart at the beginning of each oracle. Malachi is the first book in this series to offer such a feature. Eddinger highlights important words that the reader will want to know as he or she makes his or her way through a pericope. Then-in what was my favorite part of this book-Eddinger has a chart at the back of the book that lists every Hebrew word in Malachi and verse references for all its occurrences. (Future printings or editions of this book could soup up this chart even more with English glosses of the Hebrew words, for the purposes of vocabulary acquisition.) Several times in making my way through Malachi and this handbook, I referred to the Hebrew word chart. A second appendix lists all the times the "divine messenger formula" occurs in Malachi.

Eddinger begins each passage with his own English translation, then analyzes the Hebrew text verse by verse. Any reader will appreciate that Eddinger prints the full Hebrew text of a given verse, then reprints the various clauses and words when commenting on them. (This eliminates the need to constantly refer to another book when using Malachi.) The Hebrew font is large, clear, and easy to read. It's fully pointed and includes the Masoretic markings that one would find in the BHS.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Eddinger discusses textual variants throughout the handbook. He especially focuses on LXX/Septuagint variants that receive attention from the BHS editors.

Eddinger gives excellent attention to grammatical and syntactical detail--down to an assimilated dagesh lene (1:13)! He treats clauses as wholes--for example, highlighting word order and fronting for emphasis. And he treats individual words and parts of speech. He never loses the forest for the trees, and he gives the trees their due attention, too. In conjunction with the "key words" chart at the beginning of a section and the appendix of all Hebrew words in Malachi, Eddinger often notes rare Hebrew words as such, giving something of their context in the rest of the Hebrew Bible. He seems to have HALOT, TDOT, BDB, and other technical commentaries readily at hand as he comments on the text.

In terms of grammar, his discussion of individual words includes syntax and morphology, with every single word parsed / morphologically analyzed and often more detail than that. Eddinger uses the qatal and yiqtol verb classification system. This may not line up with what every Hebrew student has read regarding tense/aspect in their first-year Hebrew class, but it does (at least according to some) carry significant advantages over "perfect" and "imperfect."

I've found the Malachi handbook to be an indispensable companion for reading through Malachi in Hebrew.

However, I found myself often distracted (though I didn't want to be) by the presence of typographical errors or comma splices or run-on sentences. I hope future printings can correct these, since they take away from an otherwise great book. There would be no benefit in listing typos here, but there were some 20 or more spots where either a word was misspelled, there was disagreement of number between verb and subject, punctuation was missing, and so on. Fortunately the vast majority of these are in English and so easy enough to spot. (I.e., the reader can trust the Hebrew here.) But the author's English translation sections especially seemed to be in want of a closer edit. I do hope future printings or editions can make adjustments here; I imagine students of Malachi will want to make use of this book for years to come.

Eddinger in the end is a worthy guide through the Hebrew of Malachi. The prophets often (suddenly!) shifted pronouns or speakers or subjects in their writing. Who is talking now: God, the prophet, both, or the people? Eddinger coolly walks the reader through such grammatical challenges, and others besides.

While the obvious use of Malachi is as a reference work in which to look up a given passage, it reads well as a whole, too. I eagerly await future books in the Baylor Handbook on the Hebrew Bible series.

Superb Grammatical Commentary on this Literary Pseudo-Prophet!
By John E.D.P. Malin
Professor Terry W. Eddinger's wonderful grammatical [vocables, syntax & morphology] Student Edition of the pseudo-prophetical text, "My Messenger" [Hebrew, mal'ak "messenger or angel"; Angelic 'Messenger' of Yahweh (Malachiah "messenger of YHWH" ='Elohim), Mal 3:1] is a welcome edition to the superb list of grammatical texts on the various Hebrew Texts in the distinguished Baylor Handbook on the Hebrew Bible series. I would suggest that students of this text read Professor H. Utzschneider, "Die Schriftprophetie und die Frage nach dem Ende der Prophetie. Uberlegungen anhand von Mal 1,6--2,16" (ZAW 104: 377-94) before studying this text. There are six disputations in the Malachi Hebrew Text (English Chapter Divisions): First [Mal 1:2--5], Second [Mal 1:6--2:10], Third [Mal 2:10--16], Fourth [Mal 2:17--3:5], Fifth [Mal 3:6--12] and Sixth [Mal 3:13--4:3]. "Schriftprophetie" is prophecy by means of the literary interpretation of older traditions.

This Hebrew Text was composed by an anonymous tradent sometime between ca. 480 BCE to 350 BCE. It was definitely composed during the Persian Imperial occupation of Palestine; it has all the markings of the Second Temple period in outlook, language and theological concerns.

Once again attention must be drawn to two outstanding problems with these student texts: (1.) careless misprints in the English portion of the texts [the Hebrew Text with its vowel-pointings and cantillation marks are of an unusually high-quality accuracy]; and (2.) more detailed preparation of a competent Hebrew-English vocabulary glossary. How are the young Hebrew student-savants to acquire a mastery of an author's or tradent's (in the case of "Malachi") language and idioms, if a glossary is not provided? This is mental sloth and physical laziness!

This is becoming too important of a series not to re-issue all these editions with greater attention to editorial proof-reading [See my Amos review here for a pagination of its vulgar errors].

Since Abram gave a brilliant, detailed review of this particular text above, I need not paginate further here.

I strongly recommend that intermediate and advance students, as well as young scholars of Hebrew who are just starting out their career, to purchase this volume for their classical Oriental library. Also, Amazon needs to add a sneak inside perusal to motivate sales of this book.

Respectfully,

John E.D.P. Malin,
Lafayette, Louisiana

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn Hebrew
By Amazon Customer
Been using this book for my Hebrew exegesis class in seminary for a few months now. It's short and to the point, but it also takes the time to clarify Hebrew idioms and phrases along with some syntactical use of Hebrew words. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn Hebrew.

The smallest and youngest of the Lundberg litter, Oddfinn, finally joined his brothers at the compound, with the Lundberg treasures in tow. Though he’s the runt, he’s fought against the demons in his own way and somehow collected a small family of fighters that he taught all he knows. A socially inept genius, he is unsure of how to go about inserting himself into the established community and making the changes needed in order to save everyone… Including his mate.

Seth Mitchell has spent his years behind the security of the gates, never really sure what the big plan is for the saved souls. When the youngest Lundberg arrives, he’s immediately taken with the offbeat Oddfinn. Seth can see the hound’s generous, caring heart, even when others just seem to think he acts, well, odd.

With outside forces trying to break into the compound and change the world as they all know it, will Oddfinn and Seth be able to save everyone while making each other a priority enough to see if they can be together?

As always an enjoyable read
By Natalie
As always this is a very enjoyable book. I love this author/series and have many of her books. They are well written, though sometimes the plot resolution occurs too quickly, and are not riddled with typos. Ms. Flynn does an excellent job writing characters that you can feel for. My only complaint (and the reason I can only give 4 stars instead of 5) is the huge volume of ads or samples of other books at end, approximately 25% of the book. This is unreasonable and if there is going to be that large a volume of ads at the end they should absolutely not be included in the page count provided upon purchase. When I see a 100+ page count, I expect all those pages to be part of the story. Otherwise, I do not feel as though I am getting my money's worth. I will continue to buy this series and would recommend it to others. I would just like to see some more honesty with regards to the page count.

Another awesome book in this series.
By Diana Holmes
The author wrapped the characters up in bright pretty bows and delivered them straight to my heart. I think this is probably my favorite one yet (I know, I know, I’ve said that before, but this time I really mean it). I laughed and cried all the way thru the story. Can you imagine having the name of Oddfinn? Odd is the youngest, smallest, and the smartest of the Lundberg brothers. All 3 of his older brothers had one dream that brought them to the school so they could find and save their mates. But Odd has been having different dreams for the last 4 years and he spent that time doing what God wanted him to. So, when he finally gets to the school, God makes sure that one of the first people he meets is his mate, Seth. But he isn’t there to save Seth, he’s there to help save everyone. Seth has been at the school for several years, and knows the routine and is raising his son Danny. But Odd doesn’t like children and they don’t like him!!! I really liked Odd, he doesn’t always relate well to others and it takes getting him to start rambling before he is able to finally tell Seth how he feels. I love how the author involves characters from oprior stories so that we know what is going on with them, letting us know who is sleeping on the couch tonight. I can’t wait to see what comes next. Think I will start re-reading the series from the beginning. I would strongly recommend this series and this author to anyone who likes m/m and some very well written stories.

Another Winner--Another Lundberg
By Kindle Customer
I have been waiting for the runt of the litter. Wow, did his brothers miss the mark--someone should have said he was a genius. Well, not at relationships, but in legal manuerving he is a genius. He came in with truckloads of stuff, a full vision, and a remedy for the problem introduced in the last book. There is some drama with meeting his mate and announcing it to the group before telling his mate! There is also the problem with Seth's son having a crush on Odd (good name, huh?). Flynn continues to craft believable main characters who I can identify with every time. I know, I have to suspend disbelief for hellhounds, angels, and seraphim, but, other than that--believable and human--err, you get the idea. She gives her characters quirks and foibles--because, well, most of us have them and where is the story if they were perfect? I recommend this book--but read all of them because you will get confused otherwise.
