Back in the spring of 1999, working as a Children's Buyer, I read an advance copy of Laurie Halse Anderson's SPEAK. My reaction to reading the book was to order a shelf-full for each of the stores. I wrote at the time that SPEAK should be required reading for all eighth-graders, both guys and girls.
Now, after reading SPEAK aloud to a couple of years' worth of eighth-grade English students, I can readily articulate some of its lessons:
We learn, of course, that Melinda shouldn't have put herself in danger by getting drunk in the dark with a bunch of older strangers. But then, after having gotten drunk and having been raped, we also know that Melinda could have avoided or mitigated that nightmare of a freshman year if either:
(1) She had spoken to adults she trusted about what had happened to her.
(2) Her friends and schoolmates had reacted to her unusual behavior (calling the cops, inconsistency in her physical appearance, skipping school, not speaking) by talking to Melinda or speaking about her to adults they trusted.
It is a totally different story, yet a very similar lesson that is encountered in FRICTION, an extraordinarily gripping tale designed for sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders.
FRICTION is written by E. R. (Emily) Frank, a young star who is ascending rapidly on the Y.A. horizon. As with reading SPEAK, FRICTION left me misty-eyed as I finished it.
In FRICTION, an innocent young girl's budding sexuality contributes to the terrible confusion--and, ultimately, to the tragic consequences--when Stacy, a new (and older) classmate begins what appears to be an insidious campaign to portray their young and very popular teacher, Simon, as a "pervert."
Alex, the seventh-grade soccer-playing girl, narrates the story of what happens after Stacy arrives at the progressive private school attended by Alex and Tim. Stacy is the girl with secrets who knows how to make an entrance:
"She's got shiny black hair down to her behind and gray eyes that take up her whole face, and she's as skinny as I am. She's wearing a purple-and-black turtleneck and jeans that look brand-new, and she grins at everybody like she's totally psyched to meet us. She's got a gap between her two front teeth.
" ' Hi,' she goes. 'I'm Stacy.' I see a flash of silver in her mouth. A tongue ring. 'Let's get this party started.'
"And that's how it begins."
Stacy's behavior and her unrelenting proclamations to the students about what's going on threatens the life-long friendship that Alex has with Tim. Alex becomes more and more uncertain in her own mind as to what the truth really is:
"I want things to make sense now, but...the things I need to figure out don't have rules. Like why Stacy wants it to be true that Simon and I like each other in that certain way. Like why I've been scared lately that maybe she's right. What if Simon does look at me?"
As with SPEAK, things spiral out of control because of the failure--by every one of the students--to confide in an adult. The events result in Alex's loss of that innocent childhood image of Simon as a teacher; she instead begins to see him as a man.
(And, so here we go again...)
Many educators apparently get weak-kneed about teaching SPEAK to eighth graders--preferring to ignore its value to those eighth-graders who could well wind up in Melinda's position. Fearing the "mature" content (or fearing other adults who haven't even read the book), they pass off all responsibility to high school teachers, thus diminishing the possibility that its vital message will be heard in time by students at risk. (Melinda notes sarcastically in SPEAK how they don't get around to learning about sex at Merryweather until eleventh grade.)
Similarly, with teaching FRICTION, I could hear the tension start building about five paragraphs back: "SIXTH GRADE!!! Discuss WHAT?!!! BUDDING SEXUALITY?!!! IMPROPER PHYSICAL CONTACT AND SEXUAL ABUSE?!!!"
That's right, let's all procrastinate until an age that it's all ridiculously beside the point. Sorry. If it were me, I'd willingly take on a thousand irate parents/administrators/school board members if it meant that I could save one kid from going through the trauma Melinda faces in SPEAK or that Alex, Tim, Stacy, and Simon all face in FRICTION.
This will be a book you'll be hearing plenty about in the coming year.

I have just finished reading three E.R. Frank books in a row. She is three for three, in my opinion.

Friction is a very accurate description of an eighth grade classroom and what can happen at a small school when you add a new girl, rumors, and the natural confusion that teens feel as their worlds change from bubble gum and Big Chief Tablets to their periods, puberty and sexual feelings.

E.R. Frank does a superb job of drawing the reader into the story, accurately and believably describing the gossip and rumor circles that can easily develop in this type of school setting, and showing how seemingly innocent rumors and drama can turn into very hurtful items.

All of the characters in this book learn a solid lesson about life and how important it is to say what you are feeling and speak the truth on behalf of those you care for, or lives can be drastically changed.

Friction is a story of life, love, learning, betrayal, repression, trust, friendship, honesty, lies, the importance of parents being there for their children and knowing when a child is crying for help.

E.R. Frank knows kids very well. She knows teens even better. Most importantly, E.R. Frank has not lost touch with the younger generations.

E.R. Frank is a gift to Young Adult literature, and Friction is just the latest in her series of unforgettable contributions.

Good "rite of passage" book

When a new girl at school starts making comments that undermine the credibility of a popular teacher, 12 year old Alex finds herself at the center of the storm. In Friction, she narrates the confusion and anxiety of her 8th grade year at a small alternative-type school; the teacher moves up along with the children, so Simon has been their only teacher. His rapport with the students is good, encouraging them with charm and hugs to push their limits and test their abilities through rock climbing and other physical challenges. He is their soccer coach too, and his years of coaching are starting to pay off; the team is solid and will finally achieve their goal of challenging a prep school team. Then Stacy joins their school. With a pierced tongue, hair that is the envy of all the girls, and a bravado attitude, she exudes an intimidating cool maturity to which she adds an air of mystery by refusing to talk openly about her family or background. When her whispered taunts about Simon take on an unpleasant sexuality, the students abandon their innocent respect for Simon, accepting instead Stacy's jaded, cynical attitude. But what is the truth, and who is right? Find the shocking answer in this accurate portrayal of the reluctant but inevitable loss of innocence in the passage from child to "adult."

Philosophical and not a concise plan for dog training

The phrase, "don't shoot the dog" turns out to be figure of speech pertaining to Pryor's teaching philosopy. Like most reviewers I bought this book thinking it had more to do with training dogs than it does. The book references dog training in places, to illustrate the application of many of the principles Pryor discusses. I believe her theory has been adopted by many dog behavior shapers and trainers, and I have found the principles effective with my rescued 8-month old dog. It takes a ton of patience to apply the principles of positive reinforcement and disregarding bad behavior, as a subtle form of punishment via witholding rewards. But, what I really need is a dog-training book that is specific, linear and concise, with both a step-by-step agenda and specifics about measuring progress before proceeding to the next level in solidifying a desired behavior. A better book that is also a bit more verbose than I'd like, is Grisha Stewart's "Ahimsa Dog Training Manual," but it must be read cover-to-cover before beginning the program of training a dog. If a qualified dog trainer ever comes out with a really concise guide to employing this philosophy with dogs (not horses, not humans, not dolphins!) I will be first in line to own a copy because, just as with dogs and all other creatures, humans need to practice and review the lessons repeatedly to not only learn them, but to keep them fresh in the mind. What I want, I guess, in a simple outline that is easy to refer back to when I get stuck or confused. Last note: Pryor lost my faith in her when she mentions she euthanized a cat whose indoor behavior bewildered her. To me, that is not what animal lovers do - - cats, especially, can become outdoor pets though their chances will be reduced, but to simply slaughter an adopted pet is appalling to me.

Not How . . . But Why.

I first heard the name of Karen Pryor from a good friend who had worked with her some years ago. John told me several memorable stories about her, then, novel approach to training marine mammals. Because you can't easily give a porpoise a pat and a good girl, when a new behavior is mastered, a whistle is used as a positive reinforcement from a distance. First you associate that sound with food, then later the sound itself becomes a reward. When I decided to take my own dogs' training to the next level, Pryor's book was the first resource that I sought out.

This book will not teach you how to clicker train your dog. That's not its intent. Don't shoot the Dog is more accurately described as a philosophical treatise on the approach and world view underlying clicker training. Herein lies its greatest strength - the clear way it goes behind the technique to explain the underlying philosophy.  She carefully ties the approach back to B. F. Skinner and the behaviorists, which provides a sense of scientific continuity. Her anecdotes are intriguing and well written

I recommend this book especially for those who have not yet begun to train their pets. The best time to decide on your philosophical approach is before the first successful sit-stay. Like good teachers everywhere, dog trainers (i.e., you) need to be comfortable with their own style. Furthermore, some teaching styles work better with some students (i.e., your pet) than with others (i.e., your neighbors pet). I agree with Jon Katz Kats on Dogs, find your style, your philosophy, and then begin to train.

Read it once, maybe twice; decide whether the approach is for you and for your dog. And, if you decide that it is, then, and only then, pursue clicker training technique. For me, the approach was quite different and very appealing. In fact, the week after I finished Pryor's book, I ordered a clicker and enrolled in an online clicker training class. The class is good, but like so many of them, it's very applied, like recopies in a cookbook. Don't Shoot the Dog provided me with an invaluable working knowledge of the theory behind clicker training.

Good Foundation and Approach, but clicker gadget an unnecessary add-on

I've been a professional dog trainer and instructor for 30 years. Pryor does an excellent job setting forth the research and reasoning behind reinforcement training and behavior shaping; she's articulate and clear and fun to read.

My issue is with the clicker gadget itself. ***If a handler has developed the eye and timing that enables him/her to implement these techniques successfully, an appropriately chosen verbal cue meets the need quite effectively.*** There is no need for the clicker gadget. It's just another bit of litter cluttering up the handler's hands. In my training hall experience, novice handlers too often conclude that clicker training is an 'easy gimmick' method for dog training. They screw around confusing the dog and losing his attention all together by using the clicker inappropriately, while failing to acquire the basic leash-handling and body language techniques that would have better served them.

About the Author
Brooke Freedman directs the Nonprofit Program at HubSpot, and has been inspired by Nonprofits as long as she can remember. Her very first job, at thirteen years old, was as a candy striper in a local hospital delivering flowers to recovering patients. Brooke's passion for solving problems with great marketing strategies coupled with her drive to help Nonprofit Organizations has made her career at HubSpot the perfect fit. Poorly designed, print on demand.

I was disappointed to receive this book only to find it was a print on demand copy. The awkward formatting and margins make it more difficult to read and make the content feel less polished. I'll update the review once I'm able to get through it. I hope the content is better than the presentation.

Alfred Marshall (1842-1924), distinguished British economist and one of the founders of the neoclassical school of economics, established his reputation with the magisterial Principles of Economics (1890). That magnum opus quickly became a standard reference work, went through eight editions in MarshallÆs lifetime, and to this day is considered one of the classic economic treatises. Among his areas of expertise was monetary analysis, but he did not have the opportunity to publish a systematic presentation of his views until his later years. Money, Credit, and Commerce, devoted to this subject, was his last major work.
Among the proposals made in this work for which he is most remembered is the adoption of ôsymmetalism,ö a plan for the combined use of gold and silver as the monetary base. Marshall also expressed his views on the relation of business fluctuations and the credit market to general unemployment. He saw reckless inflation of credit as the main cause of economic troubles.
As the foremost British economist of his time, he influenced a later generation of economists. One of his most gifted students was John Maynard Keynes, who disagreed with some of MarshallÆs ideas, yet continued to refer to MarshallÆs contributions as essential groundwork. For students of economics and monetary policy Money, Credit, and Commerce remains a valuable book.

About the Author
ALFRED MARSHALL, distinguished British economist, was born in London on July 26, 1842. His interest in economics arose out of his earlier studies of philosophy and mathematics. Following his tenure as first principal of University College, Bristol (1877­1881), Marshall taught at Cambridge University from 1885 to 1908, and lived in Cambridge for the remainder of his life.

Marshall's chief work is the Principles of Economics (1890; eighth edition 1920). One of the founders of the so-called neo­classical school, Marshall argued that the economy would run best if left on its own, and that the normal functioning of a market econ­omy leads to full employment. Though influenced by the ideas of John Stuart Mill, Marshall substantially altered Mill's frame of ref­erence: instead of analyzing how the production of goods and the distribution of income among different social classes affected, often dramatically, economic well-being, he studied price setting in a static context, focusing on small, gradual changes and the complex interrelations by which market balance, or "equilibrium," is achieved. And while the earlier political economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo had identified labor as the force deter­mining the exchange value of goods, Marshall identified it as sat­isfaction of consumers' desires, or utility.

Marshall's orderly Victorian picture of supply, demand, and price, particularly at a time when contemporary socialists and trade unions were challenging the status quo, came under attack by later economists, including John Maynard Keynes, who demon­strated that market forces can be ineffective in promoting full employment and who advocated enlightened government inter­vention over laissez-faire policies. Nonetheless, Marshall's work continues to influence orthodox economics. Alfred Marshall died in Cambridge on July 13, 1924.

Marshall's other published works include Industry and Trade (1919) and Money, Credit, and Commerce (1923).

Buckle up, it's like treading through quicksand

I have read a couple of books from Marshall and this was one of the tougher ones to get through. It's tough to find a lot of relevant features of his writing for today's economics and his writing style is simply boring at times. This book is basically just like his other book "official papers" but without the great economic explanations. Much of the book focuses on international trade and as you imagine in a book this old, it's irrelevant. In short, beware of boredom.

For the last six weeks, I have been eating/sleeping/breathing alongside this book. Despite owning a dip pen for over three years, I struggled to make any progress toward the 'modern calligraphy' style I wanted to learn.

I finally saw an online comment where a pious experienced calligrapher pointed out that 'duh, it's all based on Copperplate so how can you expect to freestyle without learning the basics?' Well, this was news to me, but at last I found a place to start.

This book seemed overwhelmingly thorough when I received it but I resolved to take it slow. I did pages and pages of practice drills before even attempting a letterform. After about two weeks and many hours of practice, I moved on to lower-case letters and did alright--all those drills were teaching me about slant and the proportions and starting a little muscle memory in my hand.

I've got a long way to go, but if I put in another hundred zillion practice hours in I might get somewhere.

A must

This book is a must have for the new calligrapher. It shows the various letters, but also gives variations on some of the letters. It is an invaluable resource. One final tip. I took my book to a local Fed Ex/Kinko's and had a spiral binding placed on it. That way I can open it up flat when I am working on my calligraphy and need to reference a letter. In fact I do that to all my craft/instructional books that I use a lot.

Clearly written and easy to understand book of directions for Copperplate Calligraphy

This book is very helpful if you are trying to learn Copperplate Calligraphy. Many years ago I had taken a calligraphy course and have forgotten most of what I had learned so this summer I ordered this book and a few others and thought maybe by the end of the year or over the winter I would hone up on my skills.

Being a small business owner of 20 years, I was truly impressed with how much I learned throughout every chapter of this book.
Tom Abbott takes you through 21 steps to improved your business, sales and yourself in such a smooth conversational tone that it makes this book a pleasure to read.

An excellent personal coach for salespeople

I spent quite a few years using the Beyond Selling Value approach (book by Mark Shonka and Dan Kosch) to help salespeople improve their approach and avoid the "vendor trap". So I couldn't help comparing The SOHO Solution to this book while I read it.

I definitely prefer The SOHO Solution.

First, Tom Abbott doesn't pad the book. Salespeople are busy, and it always felt to me that Shonka and Kosch overwrote their book. Abbott's book says what's necessary, and doesn't waste your time.

Abbott also writes in an extremely engaging way, including good stories about his own trials and errors and successes during his decade-long development of his sales coaching business. He's not spouting theory. He's explaining practice, and he does so in a very open, friendly manner. And with his book he's actually coaching you, as each chapter ends with a task for the week (all of which are very doable, not at all intimidating, and inclined to make you feel "How can I have waited so long to do this?". It's not a book to read in one sitting, but rather a companion for your own personal 21-week course.

The two books have somewhat different target readers, and this has to be taken into account. BSV is designed for people who already have sales strategies but are finding them unproductive. SOHO is designed to help people grow their small business. As such, SOHO spends a lot of time making sure that small business owners understand the questions they need to be asking themselves about their own business, about their niche, about the industries that will be their best target markets, and about how they can differentiate themselves from their competition. BSV really focuses on the questions salespeople need to ask in order to understand their prospects. They place a great amount of emphasis on pre-meeting research into the prospective client, and offer detailed advice on the dozens and dozens of things to consider in an effort to sell to a key decision-maker. Abbott briefly mentions the need to do research on a prospect, while BSV goes into extreme detail. What Abbott does is take a more emotional approach, talking about how the sales process feels to the prospect, and how to make sure that what is happening fits both the values and the businesses of the buyer and the seller.

Both books offer help with scripting calls and helpful language for developing a partnership. What I like about Abbott's approach is that he trusts you to think for yourself. This is what his tasks are all about. It's not spoon-feeding at all, but rather offering the opportunity to think it through and come up with your own way to represent your business. He's a coach as well as a salesman, after all.

BSV talks about the business fit and the solution fit. SOHO talks about how to sell the benefits of your product or service rather than just the features, since people buy benefits. It's great that Abbott spends a good deal of time (but, as I said, not too much) on this important concept, since salespeople everywhere are still going on sales calls and basically saying "Here are our super products and all the things they have and do. They're really cool. Don't you want to buy them?" Since you can't get someone to buy a benefit unless you can make sure it's a benefit that fits their business, then it's clear that asking questions is key. Abbott suggests that asking questions during the first call and the first meeting will be the way to start the relationship off. He also suggests developing a self-assessment document that prospects can fill out. He talks about the difference between relational selling and transactional selling in a helpful way too. (BSV wants you to do massive amounts of research before the call to the decision-maker. Which does make sense too.)

Because SOHO is focused on small businesses, Abbott knows there can be challenges in terms of process and organization. This is one of the ways this book really stands out. Abbott spends a whole chapter on helping small business owners think through the best way to organize their prospecting information and progress. Remarkably, he also spends a chapter on communication and adapting your style to the buyer. The thinking he employs is similar to DISC, and his concise description of how to communicate with different types will no doubt help a lot of people. There's also emphasis near the end of the book on soliciting and using feedback in order to continue improving. How many busy business owners forget the importance of this?

The one area that Abbot doesn't spend much time on, and where BSV goes into great detail, is ways to get around gatekeepers. Shonka and Kosch seem to be targeting large companies who sell to large companies, but the advice applies to small business as well (we want to sell to big companies too!). Gatekeepers are everywhere in the marketplace, and can make it really difficult to get meetings with key decision-makers.

I still give The SOHO Solution an unreserved five stars, though. It's such an enjoyable read, and there's no doubt in my mind that following the weekly tasks will lead to a much more flourishing business for any reader.

Action plan for sales success!

This is a fantastic book on growing small businesses! The 21 Selling Strategies in the book pretty much nail all the things I need to do to grow my business. What I particularly liked is the layout of the content into a weekly action plan. The action plan takes the pressure off and helps me to zero-in on one aspect of my business at one time. I am very impressed by the content in the book - from discovering your niche to qualifying prospects, from discovering ways to reach customers to studying the competitors, from sales scripts to closing techniques! Each week's strategy is packed with powerful techniques and ends with specific action plan. This is a great book and written in simple language! If you own a business and want to take it to the next level, you will find this book VERY useful.
