An Uplifting Change of Scenery....

It took me a while after purchasing this book to actually read it because I mostly like to read positive and fun books, with a few downers thrown in between. I never write reviews, but I must comment on this one. It really made me see my own life differently. I was able to take a step back and appreciate all that I have without the cloud of guilt or darkness of some people's reality hanging overhead. It takes talent to write in a way that helps us see that even small and seemingly insignificant acts of kindness and generosity can mean a world of difference to someone else. I loved that I was still thinking about this book weeks after I finished it, and felt compelled to mention it to everyone I spoke with! There is a tiny bit of content that makes me hesitate in having my young teens read it, but I feel they have much to gain from it and will be sure to have them read it soon (the fact that I hesitate makes it all the more inviting to them, and they are begging me to borrow it). There is definitely something valuable, worth while, life changing, and even beautiful, in the time spent with Sang Ly in this book that takes us to a dump in Cambodia.

It was one of the most well written and beautiful books I have read in the last few years. I am always looking for great, not good, books to read, and I was not disappointed in this book. The author is amazingly brilliant with the written word and the ability to share this story. LOVED IT!!!!!!!! We are using it as part of our book club.

Many questions and a Message of Hope

This is the second book that I have read about people living in a dump; the other one was set in India, this one is a big contrast to the other one, this is a book of hope rather than hopelessness.

The Rent Collector by Camron Wright gives a look into the life of trash pickers living in a huge dump of Cambodia.

Their daily life is roasting hot, dirty from the discarded articles, muddy from the rains, dangerous because of the smoldering piles, files and vermin. What they retrieve from the dump is not a living but sometimes enough to sell to buy rice and if they are lucky. They are forbidden to build houses so they look for materials from the dump to build three walls and use a canvas cover to block the rain. Their clothing, cooking pots and all other possessions came from the dump.

Sang Li is poor but is not aware of what people take for granted outside of the dump. This is her world. Her baby boy, Nissay is constantly sick with diarrhea and can't keep any food down so he doesn't grow. This is a constant worry of his parents. Sang Li's husband is Kim Lim, a hard working picker and loving father and husband.

You would think that the pickers wouldn't have to pay rent because of where they live and the fact that they build their own day shelters. But Sopeap Sin, aka the Cow collects the rent every month. She seems to be just a very angry old drunk woman who hates everything except her high grade wine. But because of what Kim Lim find in the trash one day, all of their lives change including the rent collector.

This story is much than what it is a life of daily survival in the dump; it is the story of hope, understanding, redemption and secrets dating back the Pol Pots' devastating regime.

I recommend this book highly because of the strong message of hope and the many questions for thought that it generates. One of them being, don't be to judge people. Read this book, you will learn!

A Fascinating Look at Human Behavior

What I found most interesting about this book is the insight it provides into human motivations and behaviors. This can be conscious manipulation -- as in why people buy things for which they have no use or even particular desire -- or less conscious influences -- why we enter into relationships and/or marry people who are totally wrong for us.

And of course, the ongoing question as to why people vote for the candidates they choose even when they would seem to voting against their own rational self interest.

An important point is that the process of understanding motivations and behaviors that the authors detail includes at least as much self-examination as it does evaluating anyone else. This can only be helpful to personal relationships.

In 25 years of research and lecture, this is the finest example of human nature, verbal and non verbal communication expertise that I have yet to come across and it delights me to have found it in paperback as well as on Kindle. You NEED this book!

Years ago I learned about soul ties and got tremendous relief after cutting soul ties with my mother. She had died 8 years prior but I still grieved her death every day. I couldn't remember her any other way than when she was so sick. After cutting soul ties I was finally at peace. I could also remember her before she was sick.

Fast forward to now and i kept cutting soul ties with my ex husband but it wouldn't last and the heaviness, hurt, loneliness and sorrow would be back with the longing to see him and constant thoughts. It never made sense because this man abused me and I never want to see him again...but these feelings and thoughts would come out of nowhere. When I got this book it revealed so much more than I knew. Using the prayers I was able to be completed free of the spirit tie to my ex...plus others I didn't know were there. Now I understand I was being affected by my ex having a soul tie to me. Even though I cut it on my end this book showed me how to cut it on his end. Amazing!!

Trauma, violence, strong emotions and abuse will create spirit ties and they need to be severed from both ends to be complete.

A Must Read for Everyone

I'd never heard of soul ties before reading this book. But after reading Ask For The Ancient Paths I felt compelled to read this work as well. It's definitely given me a lot to think about. And my prayer group will be discussing it in depth. So, I definitely would read the book and discuss it with other Christians who are strong on discernment.

Best balanced overview by the leading historian on subject

A reader from Aliso Viejo, CA Best balanced overview by the leading historian on subject Glen has studied the debates for 14 years and thus was able to provide an overview and analyses that only one with his expertise can provide. The acrimony and bitterness between the warring theoretical camps of scientists is wonderfully illumninated. The two major groups of debators believe that either an asteroid or comet on one hand, or massive volcanic eruptions on the other caused the death of the dinosaurs and most of other life on Earth. The story is excitingly told and seems to place the reader at the center of the storm of controversy that has raged for over a decade. Glen's two opening chapters make up a small book in themselves which explain the whole affair. This small book opens the larger anthology which also includes chapters by almost a dozen world-class leaders of various sciences including Stephen J. Gould. It is a wonderful work for both layman and scientist that shows both the science and the life of the scientists who struggle mightily to make their cases in an arena that seems to test both their intellects and emotional integrity. Glen notes that this work contains his larger conclusions briefly presented which he hopes to more fully detail in a future work. This is simply a fascinating, lucid, indispensible read for all interested in the subject--its hard to put down once begun.

Excellent book showing the clash of individual convictions

Dr. William Glen, in his book The Mass Extinction Debates: How Scinece Works in a Crisis, shows how the conclusions of many scientists often differ. Each scientist believes that their theory is correct and thus stands by their ideas. This can often culmunate into several groups of scientists working to verify their hypothesis.
The mass extinction debates were a group of conferences designed to get to the bottom of the most famous mass extinction, 65 million years ago, which wiped out the dinosaurs. Was it a comet, climate or volcanism? Each scientist in the book presents their views in a language that is very accesible to the lay person. The reader becomes drawn into the debates when each new conclusion becomes a logical possibility.
The power, whether manifested from within the earth as volcanism or from space as a comet, had to be strong enough to eleiminate everything over 50 pounds from the face of the earth. The theories presented offer a window into the strongest and most dynamic forces of physics. The book does not represent a viewpoint of its own. Rather, it presents the arguments for the reader to review, digest and contemplate.
The attraction to this book comes from the readers realization that a mass extinction is possilbe today. The cause of such extinctions is intriquing. The book swept me away and I reccommend it highly.
