About the Book:

Why do some people feel a perpetual state of lack and fear about money, while others feel genuinely prosperous, regardless of the size of their bank accounts? Why do some people shudder with dread when it comes to setting financial goals, while others embrace it with enthusiasm and confidence?

What makes the difference? Could it be in their relationship with money itself?

People who enjoy a healthy relationship with money share common habits and traits. So, how do they think, and what do they do differently? Are these behaviors hardwired in an individual’s psyche, or can they be learned?

In this provocative book, psychotherapist Dr. Charles Richards provides unexpected and encouraging answers to these questions. Based on his research and expert interviews, Dr. Richards shows how each of us can develop a thriving relationship with money and create a rich and rewarding life.

A t the book’s heart are the stories of people who have faced adversity with courage and created extraordinary lives. Their accounts―along with Dr. Richards’ interviews with finance professors, legislators, entrepreneurs, and mavens of success―pave a path to a brighter future for us all.

Today we live in a trying economic environment. Every day, popular financial advisors exhort us to hunker down, play it safe, and protect ourselves from an uncertain future. To the voices who promote fear and doubt, Dr. Richards answers with balance, wisdom, and optimism.

The Psychology of Wealth is for anyone interested in succeeding personally or professionally, and in achieving true prosperity. It offers golden steps on the path to a better life.

Take Control of Your Life
By Foodie Designer
I accepted an advanced copy of this book to help me understand why so many people are terrible with their money.

The Psychology of Wealth by psychotherapist Charles Richards attempts to explain how, through consciously understanding our relationship with money, we can become prosperous. This book is written from a psychologist's point of view and puts change in ones behavior squarely on the individual.

Richards defines the psychology of wealth as a sense of comfort and control in ones relationship with money. How individuals spend/borrow money is a complex issue and is a result of many factors...this book illustrates how to become conscious of your spending/borrowing habits and to act accordingly.

It was the 2008 economic crises that got the author thinking about money...he interviewed many successful people in different careers to help him understand what common qualities prosperous people possess. People who possess the "Psychology of Wealth" have the following attributes:
Self esteem
Responsibility
Determination
Achievement

Furthermore, Richards blames "unconscious spending" and behaving inconsistently for getting so many people in trouble financially.

The answer, according to Richards, is that healthy people deal with money consciously. They take responsibility for their spending. (This means that back a decade or so ago, when almost anyone could get a mortgage, the responsible person would say "no" if they couldn't afford it.)

Responsible people, in short, are adults taking charge of their lives. They educate themselves and understand what they can or cannot afford.

Pretty simple stuff...but it all makes sense. In my experience with people who spend more than they can afford, they do so because they feel "entitled."

The whole issue of being "conscious" of what you are spending makes sense...as does the concept of being conscious in order to add prosperity into your life. With all the stimulus surrounding our hectic lives, being conscious of anything can be difficult. That said, I have helped my clients who want to change something in their lives--from finding love to wealth--with simple Feng Shui. The book I always recommend is HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT: BEAUTIFY, DETOXIFY & ENERGIZE YOUR LIFE, YOUR HOME & YOUR PLANET because it simply describes how to use a couple of objects to HELP you be conscious of bringing into your life what you desire.

Recommend.

Interesting but not what the title promised
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
I read a review copy of Psychology of Wealth, with he request to review honestly. The book's title holds a promise to talk about the psychology of wealth and the author is a psychotherapist with a PhD. Therefore, I anticipated a framework based on psychology.

If you define "psychology" loosely, the book delivers. It's an easy read, more like a Readers Digest collection than a book about psychology. The cover promises, "Understand your relationship with money and achieve prosperity."

The book consists of a series of stories about real people who achieved if not wealth, then a trip out of poverty. The stories are loosely tied to principles that are somewhat New-Age-y, such as the importance of service in wealth creation. "Self-esteem" has become a controversial concept, yet the author simply introduces the idea.

On the plus side, a series of success stories can be inspirational and certainly fun to read. On the other hand, it's hard to draw lessons or achieve greater understanding. We know we are given a condensed, upbeat version, so it's hard to view them as case studies. Moreover, it's easy to pick the stories apart. Did these people have some qualities that brought them success or were they just lucky? Without a more scientific approach, we won't know.

To take just one example; on page 163, Richards tells the story of "Deidra," a teacher who was down to her last five dollars before her next paycheck. (Was her check due the next day? In two weeks? We aren't told.) Deidra gave her last five dollars to a raffle for a charity. She won the raffle, getting something she'd always wanted: a ride in a hot air balloon.

I'm reminded of the story (which may be legendary) of Fedex's founder Fred Smith, who earned funds to make payroll by gambling in Las Vegas when the company was new. Like Deidra's story, we can admire, but it's hard to know what to take away.

What if Deidra had spent her last five dollars on a special treat for herself? Why is she livig from paycheck to paycheck with no savings? The story's lesson seems to come right from the New Age: "The psychology of wealth requires trusting that no matter what happens we will have enough." (p. 163).

To be sure, some advice draws on common sense, and often this advice will be useful. For instance,on page 220, the author writes, "Take advantage of what is available now ... Just keep moving in the right direction." That's what I advise career changers myself. However, I'd like to see more of a rationale and clearer examples.

If I wanted to be picky (and sometimes I guess I am), I would say that psychology doesn't require anything; it's a field of study and work that's science-based. It's not unreasonable to ask for a more scientific approach; I've seen academic research articles describing the influence of serendipity on careers! Some of this research could be applied here.

That's my ultimate source of dissatisfaction. If this book had been written by a life coach, with a title like, "Think your way to wealth," I probably wouldn't have chosen to read it; if I did, I'd be less critical. However, when a psychotherapist writes a book with the title "Psychology of Wealth," a reader's expectations will be different. Surely the author has learned a great deal from his clinical practice. Surely he's got some thoughtful conclusions about why some people seem to attract wealth and some are always broke.

Wealth is about much more than money
By Norman Reiss
For those of us who still think wealth is mostly about money and possessions, Charles Richards offers a very different perspective. Many of the ideas I've heard elsewhere, such as:

1. how life doesn't always get better once you attain a certain income level (often it gets worse)
2. how having self esteem will make you feel rich
3. why passion for your work is critical in achieving true wealth
4. we don't choose what happens to us in life, but we do choose how we choose to respond
5. trusting that we will have enough, no matter what
6. why giving to others makes us feel wealthy
7. having a 'conscious' approach to managing your finances and debt
8. being thankful for what you already have

Even though many of us will recognize these tips, this book provides a useful reminder that there's a lot more to wealth than how much you can earn or can afford to buy.

Amazon.com Review
Book Description
A gripping, groundbreaking biography of the combative man whose genius and force of will created modern capitalism.

Founder of a dynasty, builder of the original Grand Central, creator of an impossibly vast fortune, Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt is an American icon. Humbly born on Staten Island during George Washington’s presidency, he rose from boatman to builder of the nation’s largest fleet of steamships to lord of a railroad empire. Lincoln consulted him on steamship strategy during the Civil War; Jay Gould was first his uneasy ally and then sworn enemy; and Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president of the United States, was his spiritual counselor. We see Vanderbilt help to launch the transportation revolution, propel the Gold Rush, reshape Manhattan, and invent the modern corporation—in fact, as T. J. Stiles elegantly argues, Vanderbilt did more than perhaps any other individual to create the economic world we live in today.

In The First Tycoon, Stiles offers the first complete, authoritative biography of this titan, and the first comprehensive account of the Commodore’s personal life. It is a sweeping, fast-moving epic, and a complex portrait of the great man. Vanderbilt, Stiles shows, embraced the philosophy of the Jacksonian Democrats and withstood attacks by his conservative enemies for being too competitive. He was a visionary who pioneered business models. He was an unschooled fistfighter who came to command the respect of New York’s social elite. And he was a father who struggled with a gambling-addicted son, a husband who was loving yet abusive, and, finally, an old man who was obsessed with contacting the dead.

The First Tycoon is the exhilarating story of a man and a nation maturing together: the powerful account of a man whose life was as epic and complex as American history itself.

Excerpts from an Interview with T.J. Stiles

Question: Your last book was a biography of Jesse James. What drew you to Cornelius Vanderbilt as your next subject?

T.J. Stiles: I was drawn by who he was as a person, the lack of writing about him, and the historical themes that defined his life.

Like Jesse James, Vanderbilt was man of action--decisive, dramatic, and always interesting. He courted physical danger, fought high-stakes financial battles, and always set the terms of his existence. Like Jesse James, Vanderbilt has not been the subject of much serious research. And like Jesse James, Vanderbilt opened a window on the making of modern America. Vanderbilt was central to the rise of the corporation, the emergence of Wall Street, and the birth of big business. His was a dramatic life played out on an enormous stage.

Q:How long have you been working on this book and what kind of research went into it?

TJS: I worked on it for more than six years. My research was challenging because Vanderbilt kept no diary, preserved no letters, and left behind no collection of papers. Second, the last serious biography about him was written in 1942. The increasing digitization of newspapers and Congressional documents helped, but I did most of my work the old-fashioned way, digging through archives and sitting in front of microfilm readers. My biggest discovery came when I stumbled upon the Old Records Division of the New York County Clerk’s Office; I spent months there going through original lawsuit papers from as early as 1816. I uncovered entire episodes of Vanderbilt’s life that no one ever suspected--fistfights, steamboats ramming each other, inside trading and noncompetition agreements, details about his physical office and epic tales of betrayal. I also focused on Vanderbilt’s associates and rivals, and found priceless letters about him in their papers. Of course, I spent months more going through the papers of his various railroad corporations at the New York Public Library. I found so much new material that I decided to include a lengthy bibliographical essay.

Q:Throughout the book, you highlight Vanderbilt's role in the making of the modern idea of economic regulation. You also write, "The Commodore’s life left its mark on Americans’ most basic beliefs about equality and opportunity." Where in our modern institutions do you think his legacy is most apparent?

TJS: Vanderbilt early on voiced a political philosophy rooted in radical Jacksonianism. He believed in individual equality, in the right to compete freely. He denounced monopolies and corporations. This strain of thought remains a key part of American values. Yet he ended his life at the pinnacle of an incredibly unequal society, the master of a giant corporation that overshadowed almost every other business in America. That late-life transformation strongly influenced the new acceptance of government regulation that arose after the Civil War. I don’t think so much that Vanderbilt’s legacy can be seen in our institutions as much as our economic culture--the rise of the modern idea that government should intervene to regulate large businesses, and redress the balance of wealth and power in society.

Q: What do you think Vanderbilt would have to say about our current economic climate; its root causes as well as the ever increasing bail-outs of giant corporations?

TJS: When the Panic of 1873 hit, Vanderbilt gave an immediate analysis to a newspaper reporter that virtually describes the current situation. The problem was asset inflation: a speculative bubble (in his case, railroads, in our case, real estate) that tamped down skepticism about the value of securities issued by overvalued companies (or, in our case, mortgage-backed securities based on shaky home loans). Eager to ride the rising wave, banks in New York marketed the securities abroad, giving a stamp of approval, much as they have done with mortgage-backed securities today. In other words, Vanderbilt would have understood the root causes of our crisis, despite the great differences in the economy between then and now. And, though he usually looked askance at government intervention, the seriousness of the situation might have led him to approve of strong action. It’s hard to say, because he denounced subsidies, yet after the Panic of 1873 he also urged the federal government to pump new money into the economy. In any case, he would have had a sophisticated grasp of our conundrum.

Q:Your own family history recently made national news when it was discovered, at The Smithsonian in Washington, DC, that one of President Lincoln's watches contained a secret inscription from your great-great grandfather. That must have been pretty exciting for you, not only as a family member but as a historian who has written extensively about the Civil War. How do you feel about this news and what do you make of all the attention it received?

TJS:The news accounts floored me. I never expected this favorite family story, one I never quite believed, to enter national mythology. My great-great-grandfather, Jonathan Dillon, was an Irish immigrant who was working in a Washington, D.C., watch repair shop when Fort Sumter was fired on. He happened to be holding Lincoln's watch in his hand. He made an inscription on the back of the dial, closed it up, and said nothing to Lincoln about it. My second cousin, Douglas Stiles, tracked the watch to the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, and convinced the director to open the watch up and check. The message was there--a little different from my great-great-grandfather's memory, but it was there.

I think it struck a chord with the nation at the moment of Lincoln's bicentennial. Here was a plucky, immigrant watchmaker who left a silent message of encouragement in Lincoln's pocket. No fanfare, nothing attention grabbing, just a patriotic, very human little act. I grew up with this story, and named my own son Dillon, in a kind of chain tribute to Jonathan Dillon, the watchmaker. (My father's middle name is Dillon, and of course it was my great-grandmother Isabella Dillon's maiden name.) When he was born in 2007, I often told the story about Lincoln's watch. If I had my doubts about it, I figured that no one would dare tear open Lincoln's watch to check. Glad they did.

As a historian, I found it particularly startling to be brought so close to perhaps the most important American of any era. I wrote about Lincoln in The First Tycoon. Now I know that, as he held an urgent conference with Cornelius Vanderbilt over how best to deal with the Confederate ironclad Merrimack, he might have had in his pocket a secret message from my great-great-grandfather. The story adds an immediacy to the past, showing how close any one of us is to great historical events.

From The New Yorker
In the panic of 1869, Cornelius Vanderbilt “appeared in the role of a hero,” Stiles writes, praised for steadying the markets with his confidence and his cash. In reality, Vanderbilt’s own machinations had helped push the markets to the brink. He gambled not only his fortune but, with it, the “health of the national economy,” and “the only thing more remarkable than his recklessness was his success.” Vanderbilt started out running a ferry off Staten Island and went on to control shipping lines and railroads; he built Grand Central with his own money. The canvas of his life is so large that giants like Jay Gould appear as bit characters. (There’s also Tennessee Claflin, a “magnetic physician” and clairvoyant turned stockbroker; Stiles thinks that she and Vanderbilt had an affair but discounts some of the more vivid stories about their relationship.) Mark Twain described Vanderbilt as something like the Grinch, the “idol of . . . a crawling swarm of small souls”—a cartoon that Stiles does a good job of redrawing.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Though Stiles’s admiration for the man who inspired the phrase “robber baron” shines throughout this extraordinary rags-to-riches story, he harbors no illusions about his vindictive and bad-tempered subject. Stiles is quick to set the record straight when the past has condemned Vanderbilt unfairly, but he details his unscrupulous business dealings and troubled relationships with equal aplomb. Stiles’s exhaustive research has resulted in a massive, carefully edited book, and critics were surprised by the author’s ability to keep most of them engaged from beginning to end. Filled with fascinating insights into the lives of Vanderbilt and his contemporaries, as well as America’s social, political, and economic climate, The First Tycoon is a fitting tribute to a remarkable life and a must-read for anyone interested in the making of American business.

A marvelous biography of a quiet and mysterious man of immense power and stupendous wealth
By Yesh Prabhu, author of The Beech Tree
"The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt" is an impressive and fascinating biography, wonderfully evocative of the quiet man with enormous power, influence and wealth. At the time of his death he owned five percent of America's wealth.

Even though he was known as the king of the railroad, he was much more than that: he was the king of the steamboats and ships, and the king of industries and corporations as well. He built the original Grand Central Terminal in New York, and also the mighty New York Central Railroad system connecting New York with Chicago.

This tycoon also had his share of pains, disappointments, sadness, and regrets that life offers all mortals. His son Cornelius Jeremiah's addiction to gambling and also the affliction of epilepsy greatly distressed him.

Written in simple and lucid prose, the book is gripping and entertaining to the very end: "Vanderbilt was an empire builder, the first great corporate tycoon in American history. Even before the United States became a truly industrial country, he learned to use the tools of corporate capitalism to amass wealth and power on a scale previously unknown, creating enterprises of unprecedented size."

Mr. T. J. Stiles has written a marvelous biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Reading this book was a joy.

Stiles Vanderbilt Biography is Good Beyond Words
By V. Bruy
I don't often write "reviews" because I would prefer to spend the time reading. But Stiles new book demands high praise and unreserved recommendation to any readers who enjoy good history, colorful life stories and well written and compelling narrative. The Vanderbilt story, his times, and Stiles fine writing make this long history pulse with the "can't put it down" quality of a great mystery. This truly is a must-read, and a joy from cover to cover. At the end I only wanted more!

Exceptional at any price
By M. Vanoss
A superlative and memorable biography, easily winning comparison with the works of David McCullough, William Manchester, and Robert Caro. While I joined with those who protested the original Kindle pricing of this book, and am gratified to see the reduction in price, I'll also say that the book is well worth whatever price you pay. It's without doubt a remarkable accomplishment and a rich display of Mr. Stiles' considerable talents.

I really enjoyed this book!
By Antonio Moreno
I've been following Aaron Fisher's articles for The Art of Tea magazine and the online tea journal "The Leaf" for a couple of years now, so I was really looking foward to reading a full-length work devoted to the Way of Tea. Surely you will find or may have read books on Chado, or Chanoyu, the Way of Tea as expressed by the Japanese tea ceremony... This book is positively different and will be a pleasant counterpoint to others you may have read in that it centers on what the tea ceremony is really all about in a spiritual sense, as opposed to other books that aim to serve as as instructional guides on how-to-perform the Japanese tea ceremony. I'd say the author does an excellent job bringing readers to the root of what drinking tea is all about. The book begins with a history of the masters that paved the way of tea, before continuing in a personal style where the author narrates his own experiences with tea before inviting and encouraging the reader to experience the tea ceremony first hand... for real... deeply.... a tea ceremony that revolves around living in the present and being at one with the Tao, where tea and life become synonymous. This can easily seem a bit too much for some people... but others will certainly understand... or at least strive to.

Gives readers a better understanding of tea and its role in a more serene and spiritual life
By Midwest Book Review
No one can chug boiling hot liquid, so it is the perfect beverage for time to think. "The Way of Tea: Reflections on a Life with Tea" is a guide from tea expert Aaron Fisher as he seeks to give readers a better understanding of tea and its role in a more serene and spiritual life. Hoping to serve as an introduction to the wonders of tea and contemplation, Fisher gives plenty of spiritual wisdom, drawing on eastern philosophy and religion to help readers gain a more through understanding. "The Way of Tea" is a must for those who are wondering what the big deal about tea really is.

An in-depth discourse on the many paths of tea
By RTSea15
I most appreciated the interweaving of history and tea culture as seen through the stages of philosophical and spiritual thought. The intelligent and penetrating insights and interpretations offered by the author with regards to the major Taoist and Zen philosophies are engaging to the reader. Fisher ably uses key examples of "tea Zen" from the ages to show readers that mindfulness can be found not only in each cup of tea, but also in its ritual and accompaniments. A core theme of the book is that the essence of tea is found not in the debate or study of its characteristics or in the compulsion to find, grab and "own" tea wisdom & knowledge, but through a mindful approach to contemplating, enjoying, and sharing the beauty of each brew. Overall, the book is a gracious offering by the author to share the life-altering experiences that tea can have, which I think many introspective tea lovers will be able to relate to. I think this book will be well received by those looking for an experience of tea beyond the brew itself.
