His energetic, distinctive renditions of the author's quirky and humorous cast of characters-including a priest, a lawyer, a personal assistant, a tarot card reader and a singer-make up for Baldacci's silly plot twists of reunited lovers, a thief on board the train and the avalanche that has "everyone contemplating their demise."

As he begins talking to the passengers and staff aboard the train, he meets an eccentric older woman who seems to be a regular rider, a young couple preparing to marry on the train, and a former Catholic priest. To Tom's shock, the former love of his life, Eleanor, is also aboard the train. Sparks fly between them, bringing up old feelings along with the unresolved issues from their relationship. Tom realizes this might be his second chance with Eleanor, but a series of unexpected events may derail his plans. This latest Baldacci might not appeal to all of the fans who lap up his fast-paced thrillers, but the heartwarming holiday story might win him new fans who enjoy seasonal tales. Kristine Huntley

A Delightful Christmas Story

Here we have a delightful holiday love story with "SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" written all over it. It has all of the ingredients: the lure and lore of transcontinental train travel; Christmas music; humor; romance; mystery; a huge snow storm (read "special effects"); a cast of pleasantly interesting characters; and an ending chock full of surprises. What's not to like?
The story itself has been well outlined by the Amazon.com reviewer, and it is a good story well told. It contains no foul language, no overt sex, and no violence. The novel's' secondary characters are almost uniformly well-intentioned, friendly, blessed with common sense and politically correct. (The workers on the train all work hard, love their jobs and always know what to do; the "wheelchair lady" has MS but "never lets it get her down" and "is full of good spirits despite her disability"; etc.; etc.) All of the secondary characters, that is, except for the lawyer who is utterly despicable, and who quickly gets his comeuppance!! The main characters, of course, have predictable minor flaws (like Tom Langdon's anger, which usually surfaces when an injustice is about to be done), but we never doubt that they are all fundamentally "good" people. In short, there is nothing in this novel that would ever initiate a "letter to the publisher" by a distraught reader (except, perhaps, by the Bar Association). Although none of this is bad in itself (this IS a Christmas story, after all), I found myself wishing that Tom had been more like Philip Marlowe and less like Jimmy Stewart in "It's A Wonderful Life". I think it would have made this a much more interesting story with a much more powerful ending.
However, I don't believe that this was ever meant to be a penetrating work of literature that would reveal surprising truths about the human condition. Rather, I think it was meant to be, and is, a light diversion that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy; a Christmas cordial that is meant to be slowly sipped, enjoyed, and then reluctantly put aside. It is a real escape from what currently passes for "entertainment" on TV and in the movie theaters.
To use another metaphor, this is a sweet holiday bonbon!

The Magic of Christmas and The Romance of Train Travel

If you are looking for a light, feel-good read that reaffirms the magic of Christmas and the fact that sometimes long-deferred dreams do come true, this is the book for you. Author David Baldacci shows us quite clearly that it's not the destination that matters, but how you enjoy the journey.
Tom Langdon sets off on a cross-country train trip at Washington, D.C. and plans to arrive in L.A. for Christmas. Having reached middle age, it is time to do some soul-searching and rethinking of life goals, and what better place than the peaceful journey a train can provide. As one of the characters so succintly tells our hero, "....most folk who ride trains could care less where they're going. For them it's the journey itself and the people they meet along the way...they're looking for some friendship, a warm body to talk to. People don't rush on a train, because that's not what trains are for."
What Tom does encounter is a less than peaceful situation plus a mix of interesting characters. A Christmas Eve avalanche, an on-board wedding, people who are not who they say they are, a ghost from the past, and a lot of Amtrak trivia will keep you interested as you travel cross-country on Tom's trip of self-examination. Some may call the ending predictable, but a very clever twist took me completely by surprise and made the journey even more interesting in retrospect.
This isn't great literature but it is an entertaining holiday read that makes this reader want to call Amtrak immediately to board the next train out of town. Great fun that I'm glad I found under my Christmas tree this year!

David Baldacci's The Christmas Train is a light-hearted tale that clips along at a jolly pace, much like the vehicle that carries its eclectic cast of characters. The ensemble hails from just about every temperment and every walk of life, and though they're not terribly "deep", they are interesting to watch. Much like one's travels in reality, Baldacci brings the group (with us) together, allows us to see their initial facades, and in some cases digs a little deeper. For spice, he adds a splash of intrigue to the story in the form of a none-too-complicated mystery. It's a fun diversion, but the story's focal point remains interpersonal interplay.
One truly refreshing aspect of this book is the complete absence of any objectionable material - the book could be easily rated G (or stretch to a PG for one honeymooning couple). It's nice to know there are authors who can write an enjoyable novel without heavy doses of profanity, sex, or violence. Who wants to read about that stuff at Christmastime anyway? ;-)
Worth the ride, The Christmas Train provides the reader with a warm holiday treat!

An Amazing Book with Unbelievable Tools to elict immediate & lasting change forever!!!

I have read numerous NLP based, self help books. I have spent literally thousands of dollars on digital self help programs, MP3's, paraliminals etc. I have even purchased Tony Robbins and Robert Anthony programs. I have done the age old, empowering VS dis-empowering belief exercise only to be the same afterward. For the first time, this book and Felix's 10 Step Process to communicate with the subconscious mind, shows exactly how to get the subconscious mind to co - operate with the conscious mind and bring about immediate change that lasts. Really and truly, I have never come across any self help guru or coach ever instruct on this process as way to bring about change.

Why tell somebody that the change needs to be done at a subconscious level and then never show them how exactly to do that? Well, Felix does that and how to...

If you have had limiting beliefs forever, and have suffered from phobias, addictions, fear etc. and have never been able to change in the past, give this book a try, you will be grateful that you did.

Great read, easy to assimilate, exercises are easy to perform and the results are astounding.

Truly, what world of self help has been yearning for. Well Done!!!

"Fundamentals of Game Development" is a guide to the major concepts of game design, the building blocks in which all games are constructed and made. Designed so that readers with no previous experience can understand, the book focuses on the concepts rather than the code, and covers everything from the pitch of the game to voiceover work and localization. Using examples and exercises, this book provides a hands-on approach that walks the reader through the entire process of developing a game from concept to completion. Ideal for introductory game development and game production courses the book covers history, game genre, design, story-telling, character creation, pre-production, code release, career descriptions, and more.

A common conversation in the game producing industry runs something like this:

'I've got this great new game, more than just a game it's a whole new concept that's going to revolutionize the industry.'

'Oh, I'm interested, tell me about it.'

'I can't do that, you might steal my idea.'

'Well then, at least tell me what language is it written in, what does it run on?'

'Oh, it's not written yet.'

What else can you say? The conversation is over.

There are a lot of good ideas. In fact, as this book says on one of the first pages, 'the idea is the easy part; it's turning the idea into an actual playable game that's the hard part.' This book is about the hard part, primarily that is the design of the game with a bit on production and marketing. It's an excellent introduction to how the industry really works, and yes, it is an industry with players like Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo huge companies with billions of dollars in annual revenue, thousands of employees.

This is not to say that there isn't room for new talent to come into the industry. There's always a need for good people and this book will help you if this is where you want to be.

I'm in love with these two. Tabloid players with layers - who knew? And hot too.

You know how sometimes you read a book and you loved it, it was special to you, and you try to tell your friends, "Yeah, it's a romance, sure, but it's more, you've just got to read it to see what I mean." This is one of those times, so I'll do my best.

This is my first book by Cara Dee. I didn't know what to expect, and honestly I was surprised to be touched by the characters as much as I was. First of all, I felt more honesty here in the telling of the Hollywood romance tale. Maybe Dee has an inside scoop?

You don't see them fall in love immediately or even think they are "meant to be", although you can feel it beginning. I thought the pacing was perfect. You want it. They want it. My favorite was Tennyson's point of view, because Sophie appears to have the most changes to make, but his growing attraction to her and how he tries to fight it is pure pleasure to read. Dee shows you their chemistry is like a grittiness that rubs them into better versions of themselves. It is sexy and enlightening to watch these two fall for each other and can I just say, worth a little wait, because all his fighting against himself makes the climax so much better if you know what I mean. Their first kiss in the rain, I still have tingles thinking about it. I mean it was that good, actually I may go read it again right now.

For the first time in a long time, I found myself highlighting, I mean, come on, you would too, when Tennyson says, "...Beauty is passion. I'm addicted to my work, so I find it sexy when I see there's someone else who is completely consumed by what she's doing. And she's not doing it to please others, she's doing it because it's her passion."

Can my new passion be Tennyson? Go read it, hopefully you are touched like I was. Either way, you will feel the tingles!

A must read!

I love an unlikely pairing, and Tennyson and Sophie are the textbook definition of polar opposites.

He’s the older, rough-around-the-edges director, buried in his work, and perfectly happy barking orders at his underlings. She’s a young, spoiled, not-yet-proven-herself actress, who’s one more drunken night away from the proverbial stay at Promises in Malibu.

And the studio they’re both working for demands a PR stunt in the form of a showmance to create the scandalous buzz which will garner more attention for their latest production.

What starts out as a beyond-reluctant obligation to goad paparazzi into a frenzy, evolves into real feelings and even more real consequences. Nothing is ever easy, and that pit you find in your stomach as you’re reading Cara’s latest work reminds you of the harsh realities that come with what was only ever meant to be a temporary façade.

Cara Dee has done it again to addictive perfection. I can’t wait for the second installment. August cannot come quickly enough!

A great read to start off the summer

I had the chance to get an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. With Breaking Free, the first book of a serie of two, we are off to a slow start. The author builds a solid set-up for her characters to evolve in, and I found it fascinating.
With Sophie and Tennyson, her above-mentionned main characters, the author brings us along on a journey. We get to experiment what feels like the pretty accurate way movies are being made. A lot of work and resesarch must have been done to render justice to this aspect, and it shows!

I found this book to be a very good read. I would have liked to get a bit more info on both Sophie's and Tennyson's backstory, as it seems to shape some of their actions/decisions. A few things are hinted, but I feel it would have been interesting to get just a tad more details, in order to connect with the characters on a somewhat deeper level.

Overall, I feel like it's a great read for summer. And with Part 2 coming out soon, you sure will be looking forward to it as well. On thing for sure, that cliffhanger of an ending sure makes us want to read Part 2 immediatly.

About the Author

Mark Leccese is an associate professor of Journalism at Emerson College. He has worked in print and online journalism for 35 years as a reporter, editor, and blogger. For several years, he was the media criticism blogger for The Boston Globe and WBUR-FM, a National Public Radio affiliate. His work has appeared in the Columbia Journalism Review, Quill, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Commonwealth, America, The Boston Globe, Boston Phoenix, and Boston Magazine.

Jerry Lanson is the author/co-author of Writing for Others, Writing for Ourselves; Writing and Reporting the News; and News in a New Century. He currently blogs for the Huffington Post and has posted several hundred blogs over the past five or six years on five different blogs. He was the first chair of the Department of Journalism at Emerson College (1999-2005) and has taught full-time on the faculties of NYU, Boston University, and Syracuse University.

If you want to write in the blogosphere, you must buy this book!

The Elements of Blogging is so incredibly helpful. I am a TV writer living in Los Angeles, and because I work seasonally, I wanted to learn how to create a blog to improve my writing skills, so I don't twiddle my thumbs in the off-season. The Elements of Blogging gave me a ton of ideas and a boost of confidence as well. ("The odds are you know more about something than others--and probably more about several somethings.") Especially instructive was this advice: "You don't have to post every day, but you should write every day, even if only a few lines." This particular advice is made easier by the book with its fun and easy-to-grasp exercises at the end of each chapter. I also appreciated the guidance on ethics, podcasts, gold coins, and "link love". All that plus the author's piece on media coverage of a foul-mouthed David Ortiz made my day. Bravo.

Great book to educate people on blogging!

Social media is a huge part of my job, and we have been thinking of starting a blog. I bought the book because of that and also because one of the authors was my former journalism professor and one of the best teachers I have ever had, so I knew I'd learn a great deal. This book gives solid guidelines for starting and maintaining different types of blogs (travel, advice, politics, everyday, etc.) and building your brand. The book covers humor, ethics, blog design, dealing with spammers... It would be a great textbook for journalism or communication classes, and it's a really great reference for those of us who started out getting our news from print media and now have transitioned to online media! It would also be a great book for the "home blogger," small businesses, and anyone else thinking about blogging.

The next best thing to having Jerry Lanson as a teacher!

If you have not had the good fortune, as I did, to have Jerry Lanson teach you how to write and report the news, this book is the next best thing. The Elements of Blogging pulls off the neat trick of being erudite but accessible, practical but theoretically sophisticated, and useful to novices and beginners alike. It draws useful distinctions between news and opinion blogging and takes beginning bloggers through each step of the process of defining, designing and developing a blog. It is particularly strong when it comes to nuts-and-bolts reporting, interviewing and writing skills. That's not surprising, given the authors' deep resumes as journalists, journalism educators and writing coaches. I have already used portions of the text in a college-level first seminar class, and I plan to use it as a required text in an upper-level course on political reporting.class. No matter how the news business changes, the skills imparted in this book will continue to be essential. I heartily recommend it to anyone aspiring to be a professional communicator.
