Erich has taught millions of players around the world that once thought they were unteachable. Excellent

There is A LOT of information available on the Internet about learning to play guitar. Two years ago I decided to re-start learning to play (to entertain myself) after being away from guitar for more than 35 years. I found, after trial and error a couple of online teachers I really like.

A few weeks ago I found Erich's website when I was looking for some country styles. I had been concentrating on blues prior to that. I liked his YouTube videos so I bought a couple of his modules. They were, well ... ok. As I said, I had found a couple of REALLY good blues teachers.

So, when he announced this book I was a bit skeptical. But, I thought I would at least check it out for $3.99.

I kind of speed read through it and I am AMAZED! He has done an awesome job on this book. Not only the book. There is a ton of supplementary videos and other resources linked to just where you need them in this book.

I HIGHLY encourage anyone just starting out to get this book now. For beginners like myself that have already gotten a head start, it has some good info in it too. More advanced players may not find it useful.

A "Feel-Good" Book with Scanty, Misleading Information

This book contains many gaps in teaching the basics, thus could even be a setback to beginners. Its author is strong on encouragement, but unrealistic about the basics of performance.

Seeing the great number of positive reviews on Amazon for this book, I ordered it, and hoped to pick up some pointers, but unfortunately, I was incorrect. One apparent reason for the many positive reviews and the author's claim it is the "#1 Amazon bestseller" (quite unlikely since it's been available only for a few months and is gotten mainly through mail, not at music stores) is his frequent pleading to the reader---SIX times through the book's pages---to click on the website given to email positive reviews for posting on Amazon.

But to the specific problems in the book's content:

1. The book's exercises are all drill, with nary a single song given to practice them. One learns guitar techniques and learns to enjoy the guitar mainly by playing songs. This is a serious flaw.

2. He omits many basics, the exclusion of which can get beginners practicing incorrectly, leading to even more difficulty in unlearning those errors later, e.g., chord changing, the kinds of strings and how to put them on, etc. The book purportedly is for both acoustic and electric guitarists, but he says virtually nothing about the latter, for instance, the use of power chords. On the other hand, he will sometimes go into excessive complexity for beginners to sort through, e.g., listing dozens of fingerpicking patterns, rather than giving a few most useful and versatile ones.

3. He develops unrealistic expectations about practice and proficiency. Note the book's subtitle: "How anyone can quickly become a strumming, chords, and lead guitar ninja." That definitely won't happen with the partial skills imparted here. In dozens of pages, Andreas repeatedly states that the quantity of practice is much more important than innate talent. This advice will bring relief to many unconfident students of the guitar. But missing is practical advice on HOW to practice, for instance, practicing regularly every day, if only for 10 minutes, playing a piece very slowly, not up to tempo, until you can play it error-free.

4. The book is oddly organized, ending in not an index, but a plea for "A Cause Close to My Heart"---animal welfare! This self-published book desperately needed a good editor.

There are many superior guitar instructional books out there. One I've especially liked and learned from is The Complete Guitar Player, by Russ Shipton, which includes accompanying CDs.

Guitar Mastery Simplified - a newbie perspective

Usually, students want to start their guitar training by playing a simple song and working up from there. Back in the day, I tried that, too. I got frustrated, and put it away for many years. A few years ago, I took lessons from a very accomplished classical guitarist. Most of his students were in Junior High or High school, and his method may have worked well for that age group, but I am over 60 years old now.

My frustration in the past was that I had no finger strength, little flexibility, and small hands.

This course starts with basics like posture, anatomy of the guitar and the usual basics, like tuning, etc., but quickly moves to dexterity drills and other exercises to increase strength and reach -- the things needed to play any style of music on the guitar. I have been practicing the exercises, and already feel like I am further along than I was with the expensive lessons.

He also started with 3 basics of left hand mechanics: use finger TIPS to fret, fret just behind the fret, and keep some room between the neck and the palm of the left hand. Using those three tips, I have already improved.

I skimmed over the rest of the book because it quickly gets into material I am not ready for. I want the music theory, chord progressions and it is all there when I am ready for it. There is depth to this material, so I will be using it for quite a while.

This is an excellent book, with lots of encouragement from the author for the student. He has solid advice for everything except what to do about my small hands! I recommend this book for beginning to intermediate guitar students. There is a lot of material for advanced students, but I don't feel qualified to express an opinion on that material at this time.

It's apparent he's unearthed a link to the real killer when a third victim is discovered. The fifth McCain mystery builds on its predecessors as Sam's optimistic naivete is ceaselessly challenged by brutal acts perpetrated in the name of love. Enjoyable puzzler

Not a lot of "edge" to the main character, but there are some nicely subversive plot elements, a well-done romantic subplot, and an interesting early 1960's setting. Not a bad little mystery thriller.

Some great rock songs have lyrics that make an indelible impression, while others impress because of their melodies or instrumentation, and still others are memorable because of their overall atmospherics, their "feel." Such is the appeal of Wolfman Jack's autobiography--its feel. The Wolfman lovingly and proudly communicates the atmosphere of the rock 'n' roll world as he describes his career--he started on a superpowerful, unregulated AM radio station in Mexico; he then landed network TV gigs, stateside disc-jockey jobs, and movie appearances; finally, he has become a contemporary icon. Station XERF, just across the border from Del Rio, Texas, reached most of the U.S. West and Midwest with plenty of radio ministries and Wolfman Jack's wild, howling shows. Always an advocate of black music, the Wolfman mixed records by blues and rhythm-and-blues artists with more mainstream rock to pioneer the parents-of-teens' aural nightmare that is now so familiar from its portrayal in numerous don't-knock-the-rock movies. What a Life!

Wolfman, who left us a few years ago, led a life few of us can imagine. Influenced by the great DJ's of a long lost era, and music few of us have ever heard (I was born in 1949), Wolfman was a juve (short for juvenile deliquent, a term for a lost soul, or worse, someone headed into the hands of the justice system). But through an amazing string of circumstances he found himself first in a prestigious broadcasting school, then happened into a string of low power, low budget AM stations where he was allowed to create the persona of the Wolfman. His experiences with XERF, the Mexican powerhouse read like a poorly written thriller, except they are true. I couldn't put this book down and knocked of it's 350+ pages in two days. Buy this book, you won't be sorry.

HAVE MERCY! Relives the era but fails to capture THE VOICE.

HAVE MERCY! takes a wild ride through an important era of broadcast history. HAVE MERCY! captures the renegade spirit that led a few pirates and pioneers to take risks for entertainment sake. HAVE MERCY! does a superb job of describing the times and painting a picture of what those who ventured into early rock were up against. HAVE MERCY! helps us to better understand what made one white boy howl in the night - and others sing the blues. HAVE MERCY! makes clear the impact of radio in the early days of rock-n-roll. Its a classic expose' on pop culture. HAVE MERCY! shows the drive and determination and focus and endurance and high energy it took to succeed in a highly competetive industry. HAVE MERCY! catches the gimmicks and the glamour. HAVE MERCY! drops all the right names in all the right places. HAVE MERCY! doesn't shy away from revealing the hazards, the hardships, the dirty deals and the difficult decisions either. HAVE MERCY! is a roller coaster without seatbelts - a wooden one with plenty of bumps and sharp turns and deep drops along the way. HAVE MERCY! chronicles the life of a street tough kid with a dream - someone least likely to succeed - who beat the odds and made it. HAVE MERCY! relives the roots of rock as told through THE VOICE that spoke for a whole generation. HAVE MERCY! grabs onto the craziness of THE VOICE but doesn't see the flip side. Nothing is revealed about the inner stuff the Wolfman was made of. HAVE MERCY! tells the what, when and where of Wolfman's story but fails to communicate the why well enough for reader's know who the Wolfman really was. Its as if the author is writing from a distance - on the outside looking in when a more compelling biography would be told from the inside looking out. HAVE MERCY! recants the making of the personality . . . but fails to see beyond the legend the Wolfman had become. If I hadn't already known the huge impact Wolfman had on my generation, I'm not sure I would've comprehended it from the book. The author tries, but fails to show the true connection between THE VOICE and his listeners. HAVE MERCY! gets the facts but not the feelings. Its like when a record company measures the quality of a song by its sales instead of its message or craftmanship. HAVE MERCY! records details but never gets the big picture. The author never catches the vision. He rides with the Wolfman but never contemplates the reason. He notes the Wolf's charisma but never understands it. Its clearly too overwhelming to describe and so its treated almost like an after-thought. Not a lot of effort goes into getting to know Wolf's fans or measuring his impact on the world around him either. HAVE MERCY! never sees the Wolfman as a wholistic being - the author never gets into his soul the way I, the reader, wanted him to. And so, the Wolfman came across as a wild, but somewhat packaged, entertainer with a well inflated ego - rather than a dedicated spokesman whose main mission may have been just to spread some joy. What if the radio was nothing more than a vehicle to enable the Wolfman to accomplish that goal? HAVE MERCY! only suggests such honorable motives - instead the author dwells on stereotypical indicators that suggest the Wolf was mostly after fortune and fame. The Wolfman is depicted as a relentless industry climber willing to do just about anything to claw his way to the top. HAVE MERCY! had me asking whatever happened to Robert Smith? Did he completely disappear whenever the Wolf came out to play? If HAVE MERCY! were an instruction manual on how-to develop a strong stage personality the author would succeed in covering the steps and listing the most sensational ingredients needed - but he'd fail to give a clue as to what makes the recipe work. The author wasn't able to make me feel the fire and the author didn't manage to make the Wolfman bleed. His pen barely scraped the surface. Had it dug deeper it may have gotten to the heart of the story. A good book gets the info, keeps the pace and tells an interesting story - but a great book goes beyond the expected by sharing keen insights and by giving the reader something valuable to hang onto long after the last page is read. HAVE MERCY! is a good book, not a great one. I walked away exhausted from a really wild journey - but still not certain as to who I'd shared it with. That's a shame because I'm certain there was more to the Wolfman than the world ever got a chance to know, or this author ever managed to uncover.

Forensic Document Examination enlightens forensic document examiners, forensic investigators, attorneys, and others using the services of forensic document examiners with basic principles, current trends in the area, and standards and methodologies which were non-existent 20 years ago. Instrumentation has moved beyond the microscope and the magnifying glass to digital cameras, digital microscopes, video spectral comparators, electrostatic detection devices for the development of indented writing on paper, scanners, and software programs like Write-On 2® and Photoshop®. All of this equipment and these various techniques are covered here, and more.

About the Author
1985 was a good year. Jane Lewis finished an internship in the Questioned Document section of the Secret Service Lab in Washington, DC. She graduated with a Master of Forensic Sciences degree from George Washington University and got a job as a document analyst with the FBI in the Hoover Building in Washington DC. She soon moved up the mall to the Secret Service Lab. But the lure of beer and bratwurst was too strong and Jane found herself back home at the Wisconsin State Crime Lab in Milwaukee. Twenty-three years later Jane retired from the Milwaukee Lab and moved on to greener pastures working in private practice in Milwaukee.
She is certified by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners. Jane is a member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE), Assistant Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners, a Director representing the Questioned Document Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), a fellow in the Questioned Document Section of AAFS and a member of the Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists (MAFS).
Jane has testified more than 50 times as a forensic document examiner. She has presented her research at the annual scientific sessions of AAFS, ASQDE and MAFS. Her research has been published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences and the Journal of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners. Jane along with three colleagues wrote a chapter on Forensic document examination in the book Forensic Science Current Issues, Future Directions, edited by Douglas H. Ubelaker, published in 2013.
