A good first step into the world of Quantitative Finance

The author has written a nice, lively elementary text on mathematical finance. This book can serve as a excellent launching point into the topic. For the next step in the reader's development, I recommend the very good intermediate level treatment by Bjork in Arbitrage Theory in Continuous Time. As a capstone for advanced study, I recommend the advanced treatment of Musiela and Rutkowski's Martingale Methods in Financial Modelling.

Hull starts out with several chapters on the basics of the derivative contracts in his study. The contracts introduced are forward and futures contracts, interest rate swaps, and equity options. The basic definitions of each contingency contract is given, as well as characteristics of the markets where these contracts trade. Some basic trading strategies are also studied.

The study of the option pricing model problem begins in earnest in Chapter 10. The section on one-step binomial tree model leads to a very intuitive description of risk-neutral valuation.

Chapter 11 introduces continuous time stochastic processes in a very intuitive setting. To avoid the hard-core Ito calculus, the author motivates the stochastic differential by considering difference equations. This is a nice technique and makes the material accessible to the beginner. The next highlight is a statement of Ito's lemma. This is not given in full generality, but only stated precisely as needed for Black-Scholes calculations. The appendix gives an intuitive motivation for Ito's lemma based on the multi-dimensional Taylor's formula.
This is a nice illustration as Taylor's formula is indeed a component of the formal semi-martingale based proof of Ito's rule. See for example Oksendal Stochastic Differential Equations: An Introduction with Applications Chapter 4, Karatzas & Shreve Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus Chapter 3, or Rogers and Williams Diffusions, Markov Processes and Martingales: Volume 2, Itô Calculus.

Chapter 12 is devoted to the Black-Scholes-Merton theory of option pricing. The famous Black-Scholes PDE is derived via Ito's rule and application of a delta hedge. The author doesn't directly solve this PDE (via the standard application of the Feyman-Kac formula). Instead a nice proof of the option pricing formula is established in the appendix based on a simple log-normal distribution argument.

Chapter 13 discusses option pricing in for other contingency contracts. In Chapter 14, we return to equity options by studying the Greek letters. The reader discovers the Greek letters can be thought of as coefficients of the Black-Scholes PDE and learns some elementary hedging techniques.

Chapter 15 discusses implied volatility and volatility smiles. It is here that the astute reader gets his first indication that the Black-Scholes theory for option pricing may not be as robust or "true to market" as the reader may have been lead to believe. (The folks at Long-Term Capital Management learned this hard lesson rather publicly.)

A survey of topics of interest follows in the next handful of chapters. The material on value at risk, the GARCH volatility model and exotic options is somewhat superficial. The careless reader will come away feeling he knows quite a bit more than he really does.

Martingale theory is touched on in 21 and the Girsanov Theorem is alluded to, but these topics are really too complex and require too many prerequisites for proper treatment in the context. A general multi-variate version of Ito's Rule is stated in the appendix of this chapter.

The next section of the book deals with term-structure models and their applications. One-factor models are discussed along with the various limitations of each of these models. This gives a nice historical treatment. The Heath-Jarrow-Morton and Libor Market Model k-factor term-structure frameworks are introduced. Without the supporting martingale theory, the analysis of these models presented here is very limited.

The last several chapters of the text are very survey-like and breezily touch on topics such as credit risk, credit derivatives and energy derivatives. There isn't a lot of theory in these chapters at all, but at least the reader is made aware of the existence of these kinds of contingencies.

The book wraps up with a cautionary chapter in the form of lessons learned. The unwary reader might see all of the derivative-related train wrecks and say to himself "well, that won't be me". The problem is that it really might be you if you truly (and foolishly) still believe the equity prices always follow geometric Brownian motion. See Lo & MacKinlay A Non-Random Walk Down Wall Street for an excellent exposition into the limitations of the basic assumptions underpinning the Black-Scholes-Merton theory.

If nothing else, Hull's last chapter should convince you that maybe this isn't the only book you'll ever want to read in your study of mathematical finance.

Unparalleled resource for those entering quantitative finance

This review is written for many of those switching to quantitative finance from other fields. Hull's book will become an essential foundation-builder for such people.

Let's assume you want to become a quantitative analyst or a risk manager switching from another, preferably quantitative, field. Then in order to get a job you need to have the following:

1. Knowledge of derivatives and markets;
2. Knowledge of statistical methods and data analysis with applications in finance;
3. Computational methods supported by software such as C++ and R to be able to apply theoretical knowledge obtained in 1 and 2;
4. Proof that you have decent understanding of finance through obtaining a designation such as PRM (Since, under our assumption, you enter finance from a different field, you don't have work experience. That is why PRM will be the most suitable for you as you will just need to be well prepared academically to pass the exams and get the designation).

The book under review will be absolutely essential for you for clearing steps 1 and 4. It has been written with the care for the reader in mind.

Hull, in contrast to many other authors, does not try to show off his intellectual superiority by using complicated and abstract language which would normally be designed to make the reader feel miserable. In contrast, he wants the reader to become knowledgeable by carefully guiding him through complicated topics with numerous examples and explanations. The friendliness of exposition does not mean that the rigor is lost though; the book is written with the perfect rigor, but it is achieved without making it too dry and abstract. The scope of coverage is amazing: all major aspects of derivatives and markets connected with them have been covered. Particular importance is that Hull gives lots of practical exercises which should be completed to obtain fluency in the theory and its applications. Only after you work carefully through the book, you can strengthen your skills of (1) by working through other texts, such as Joshi's The Concepts and Practice of Mathematical Finance (Mathematics, Finance and Risk) and More mathematical finance.

To get the grasp of (2) and (3), you can work through Ruppert's Statistics and Data Analysis for Financial Engineering (Springer Texts in Statistics) and Joshi's C++ Design Patterns and Derivatives Pricing (Mathematics, Finance and Risk).

This book, together with the official handbook, will definitely prepare you for PRM, thus fulfilling (4). Without it, preparation for the PRM will be difficult, if you don't have prior financial experience.

I don't know about another high-quality, reader-friendly resource which could compete with Hull's book in providing a strong foundation in becoming a serious financial engineer. When one is entering new field, a good starting book is essential as it will either make the transition easy or frustrating. The book under review will make such transition painless.

The gold standard (although you may not need to upgrade to the seventh edition)

This is the definitive introduction to derivatives. As evidence of its relevance, the following chapters are assigned to Financial Risk Manager (FRM) candidates: Hedging Strategies using Futures (Chapter 3), Determination of Forward and Futures Prices (5), Interest Rate Futures (6), Swaps (7), Properties of Stock Options (9), Trading Strategies Involving Options (10), Binomial Trees (11), Black-Scholes-Merton Model (13), Greeks (15), Volatility Smiles (16), Exotic Options (22).

Given that this is an expensive text, the most frequent question I get is, do I need to buy the latest edition? Perhaps you do not: the updates from fifth to sixth edition, and from sixth to seventh edition, have both been modest "version" upgrades. Here is a rule-of-thumb: the more introductory the topic (i.e., the earlier the chapter), the less likely you want/need the upgrade. The early chapters on futures, hedging, interest rate futures, swaps, and option pricing have barely changed since the fifth edition. Further, from what i can tell, the end-of-chapter questions are largely the same/similar.

In regard to the seventh, in addition to a number of refinements (e.g., some reorganization), the two noticeable differences are: a new chapter on valuation of employee stock option (a particular expertise of Hull's) and more material on certain credit derivatives (CDOs, credit default swap) including a bit more help on Gaussian copula. However, in regard to credit derivatives, in total, Hull gives a quick tour which may be challenging to the new learner. It is maybe not the best place to start for credit derivatives per se.

But, this is the gold standard, a work of art, as far as finance texts go. It may be an introduction but it offers encyclopedic breadth. I've read it several times over, worked most of the problems, taught from it, argued with it, and yet I keep needing to refer to it--Hull is the trusted adviser you call in a crunch, because you know he knows--full mastery is probably still years away.

Stop being a starving writer and make good money doing what you love.

I really do not remember how I found out about this book, but it has literally changed my professional life. I have been a full-time writer and editor for about two years and was plugging along with billings of $3-4K a month; but within two months I looked at my billings and they are now at $7-8,000 a month! Just me! Wow! I didn't start from scratch as many people who read this book will be doing; I already had in place some of the basics. But I was able to take Peter's recommendations and double my billings! I live in one of the states hardest hit by the economic meltdown.

I did not read the previous editions, so I cannot compare this newest addition to those. I just know that Peter starts by blasting the "starving writer" meme and helping people to realize that writing is both a skill and an art that cannot be done by "just anybody with a computer". Peter gives step-by-step instructions on how to build a well-paying writing business for yourself using all of the latest tools and techniques available. Most importantly, all through the book, directly and indirectly, Peter reminds writers that they are WORTH charging real rates. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme; but solid advice on building a real business at a nice even pace over the next several months.

I did raise my hourly rate from $55 to $75/hour and my per word rates from $0.10 to $1.00 - $1.50 per word, but more importantly--I almost exclusively charge by the project and use my hourly and per word rates as just benchmarks. I have almost more work than I can handle AFTER I changed my rate schedule.

So, if you are one of those writers who is struggling with less-than-U.S. minimum-wage writing projects and trying to compete with people who charge or will only pay $0.01/word or less, get this book NOW. Then get a yellow highlighter and a pen and paper--remember those?--and read, highlight, take notes and read again. Then stop complaining about the economy and overseas competition and revise your entire business to not only reward yourself with a decent annual compensation ($60,000- $100,000 or more) before the end of twelve months, but also a well-balanced work life.

Take it with a grain of salt

I had bought Bowerman's original edition and picked up the newest one last year. It's obvious he missed the "freelance collapse" of 2009, as much of his advice just doesn't pan out now. I've been writing for commercial markets since 2005, and after a fantastic year in 2008, I'm making 1/4 of that the past two years...and I'm commanding money in the top pay bracket. Companies just aren't hiring and are pulling it in-house or cutting advertising/marketing budgets altogether. Not that it's his fault, but do realize that the market right now is different than the one he is writing about.

I also have some credibility issues with a writer who doesn't know the difference between "phase" and "faze" and a few other basic homonym differences. That's freshman college stuff.

Great resource

I bought the first edition of TWFW several years ago, and hesitated before buying the new version -- would it really have enough new information to make the purchase worthwhile? Actually, yes -- this time around, Bowerman has inserted plenty of examples from other writers so that, whatever your challenge, you can find a story from someone whose background or experiences are close to your own. Because Bowerman comes from a sales background, I always felt a little overwhelmed by his cold call methods in the first book -- easy for him! But in the second book, there are plenty of examples from people who loathe the idea of picking up the phone to drum up business -- and that's just one example. Lots of tools, lots of ideas, lots of good stuff -- now I have two books that are dogeared from overuse!

A superb primary text perfect for self-directed study

From the stylings of pre-Socratic thinkers to the work of Plato and Aristotle, to an overview of more modern philosophers such as Descartes, Nietzsche, Kant, and Hegel, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy touches upon the quandaries that have hounded thinkers throughout history: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of what true freedom is. "If not all acts are free in the same way, should freedom itself depend on the degree of enlightenment it brings? Or is every man essentially free in so far as he is a man? If this is the case, we must not simply identify the capacity for being free with the enactment of freedom. We still don't know how freedom can be made concrete in the world." Surprisingly, this works.

As someone who has devoted four decades of his adult life to either teaching or studying philosophy (or both), I was skeptical when a publisher sent me this little book entitled "A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy." How could anyone provide an adequate overview of philosophy in 30 short snippets that come to just over 100 pages of text?

When I began reading I soon discovered that Dominique Janicaud had done precisely that. Written originally for his 20-year-old daughter (and translated into English by Lisabeth During), "A Beginner's Guide" truly lays the foundation for reasoning philosophically and shows why this is important. Along the way Janicaud briefly describes some of the main ideas of philosophers as diverse as Socrates, Heraclitus, Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Heidegger. Needless to say, in such a short book, there are some important figures that have gone missing, such as Aquinas and Wittgenstein. But the reader will come away from this book with at least a glimpse into what some major philosophers have thought and why they have thought the way they have.

However, what is most beneficial in this book is not the philosophical date it provides (which is admittedly sketchy) but the love for philosophy that shines through and the raising of the questions that philosophers have asked since the time of the ancient Greeks (as well as why these questions are truly important). If this book inculcates a love of philosophical thought and a desire to learn more in one individual, it will have been worth the effort.

Gracefully and pleasantly written, I didn't think this book said much.It's not really an introduction to philosophy.It's a meditation of sorts by the author on why philosophy matters .I enjoyed some of his comments on the impenetrable ( for me) Hegel.If you read this you will probably enjoy it.However if you don't , you aren't missing much.

A good ight reading

It is a good light novel which takes you back to your younger days! Try to read it for the sake of a youthful nostalgia! The setting is typically Indian and the author emotes very well as an Indian youth. The author's style of story telling is flowing and his language is befitting the style. The story has its periodic surprises and shocks which makes it an interesting reading. However, towards the end it drags a bit.

If you enjoy reading something youthful, don's miss this novel. However, I don't really know if the novel will appeal to the international reader as the issues are basically Indian by nature.

Lots of typos, redundant, and even with the [overly] excessive examples, often it's unclear what is being said. Also, sentences would break off in the middle and start on a sentence from three pages ago. However, I did use the kindle version, so not sure whether some problems were to do with the book or the kindle app.

The book gives a great foundational look at Sociology. Its chapters flow between the different parts well. From the capstone of the Sociological Imagination at the beginning to the roof top of modern social theorists like Ritzer, the book was comfortable to learn from. Glad I purchased it.

A+ Book

I really enjoyed this book. Burns and Kick give a well balanced introduction to Sociology. They have a wide range of information that shows great thought, time and heart put into its pages. It starts with the sociological imagination and then goes into concepts of socialization and other aspects that are core to how we work and behave together.

Packed with knowledge and insight, Burns and Kick pepper it throughout with great examples to help bring the information to life for the reader. They thoroughly cover theories from micro, meso and macro levels and then go on to institutions. Ritzer’s McDonaldization, post-modernism, chaos and complexity theories provided food for thought! It really made me challenge my ideas on how we have become the modern and post-modern society that we are today.

Foundations of Social Understanding is a wonderful book that leaves one feeling like they gained more than just a framework for future classes. It provides readers with a sure foundation to build their future knowledge while moving forward with their thinking. The concepts discussed throughout the book challenge the reader’s perceptions and how they view the world around them. It was very rigorous, but I will be recommending this course and book to other people I know.

I was not sure what to expect from a beginning seller, especially since I've never bought from an independent Amazon seller. However, I am pleased with my bargain. I believe the condition of the book was the only information that was given. I was not sure what to expect as other copies being sold described the condition of the cover, binding, pages, and writing or lack thereof. As it was the only book without these features I didn't want I decided to buy it and hope for the best. The main thing I was hoping for is that the binding was in tact. When it arrived I was happy to find the binding was secure. I have found some writing/highlighting, a sticker on the spine, and the "B" in "Beyond" in the title was torn off, but I don't mind. For the price, I'm content with my purchase.

A decent math book

I needed this textbook for a 6-week summer math class. 3 weeks into the class, there are very few negative things I could say about this book. One would be this: the book doesn't explain some of the topics as thoroughly as say, an algebra or geometry textbook does. While I've found some of those textbooks to have almost too much explanation in them, this textbook, in my opinion, didn't have quite enough. Overall though, I needed an inexpensive used book for a short class, and that's what I got. I'm happy with it.

First published in 1949, this remarkable book is the culmination of a life-long study of every aspect of the potato. Dr Salaman is concerned first with the history of the potato as a member of the botanical genus Solanum, its adaptation by man as a cultivated plant, and the record of its spread throughout the world; secondly he considers the influence the potato has exerted upon the social structure and economy of different peoples at different times. The archaeological and anthropological evidence for the early significance of the potato among the peoples of Latin America is discussed in detail with numerous illustrations, but the central portion of the book is concerned with the European, and particularly the Irish evidence. Naturally the Great Hunger is the most dramatic single episode in the entire work, and Dr Salaman does full justice to his tragic theme, concluding with the observation that in Ireland 'the potato ended in wrecking both exploited and exploiter'. Elegantly written, with numerous vivid anecdotes, Salaman's History has long enjoyed the status of a classic. This revised impression, with a new introduction and emendations by Professor J. G. Hawkes, enables another generation of readers to sample what Eric Hobsbawm has referred to as 'that magnificent monument of scholarship and humanity'.

Potatoes are awesome

This is a simply amazing story of love, compassion, and potatoes. I thought I knew everything about potatoes but I was wrong. My children beg me to read more about potatoes every night before bed. Since reading this book I have bought over 600 tons of potatoes. Thank you for this wonderful and inspiring book :)

Very scholarly and extremely interesting. The roots (no pun intended) of modern civilization have
more to do with the potato than I could ever have imagined. The South American historical speculations
are riveting and with the more recent archeological discoveries in that part of the world this book's
relevance is more fascinating now than when it was written some 50 or so years ago. A classic in every
sense of the word.
