At Last.

The magnificence of Rob Inglis' dramatization, both with respect to its place in the Tolkien Legend and in comparision to the present state of the spoken theatre, is quite simply ineffible. Here presented is THE ONLY completely unabriged reading of the Lord of the Rings to be found, and to commuters like me, it represents a long awaited opportunity to become aquianted with the work of a genius without fear of losing precious shards of his masterpiece to the whim of an editor. Worth every moment of the 20 hour listening time, from the endearing character voices to the hearty singing of songs and chanting of poetry that is sure to linger in your mind throughout the day. A purely wonderful experience for both Tolkien Veterans and the uninitiated alike.

Word for Word a True Delight

By all means, choose this unabridged cassette version whether you are "reading" LOTR for the first time or for the umpteenth time! I debated whether to go with this cassette version of LOTR or the newly-released BBC CD set with Sir Ian Holm. Thank goodness for Amazon reviews because after reading that the CD set was NOT truly unabridged (how could they leave out Tom Bombadil?!), it simplified my decision. Rob Inglis is outstanding reader and does a fine job selecting an appropriate voice for each of the characters. I personally find it much more pleasing than a host of voices (of course if Sir Ian had done the entire CD version, I'd be back to a difficult decision). The point for me when listening to a book is to hear the story and use my imagination; too many voices or sound effects can be distracting.

Tolkien + Inglis + Unabridged + Perfect Sound = Excellence!

In my reviews of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, both read by British Shakesperean actor Rob Inglis, I wrote that the sound quality on these audio books is crystal clear (neither too high, too low or distorted in any way), Inglis's characterizations are spot-on and the story itself (presented here in the only unabridged version available) is engrossing.
The Two Towers continues the story begun in The Fellowship of the Ring but introduces new characters, more battle scenes and a nearly palpable feeling of impending doom as Sauron and Saruman search for the ring.
Speaking of new characters, I don't think you'll ever find characters more fascinating than Ents. Ents are walking, talking trees found in Fanghorn Forest. Treebeard (a most "unhasty" Ent) is their leader. He's the oldest living thing in Middle Earth. As Inglis read these passages, I could almost picture the unhasty trees talking to Merry and Pippin. And I longed to look into their very old, wise eyes as they did.
The bottom line: The Two Towers (part two of the Lord of the Rings "trilogy") is equal to the previous books in every way.
Which means there really isn't much more that needs to be written. This is, without doubt, the best audio books edition of The Lord of the Rings available.

Jacobs set out on this delightfully eccentric endeavor attempting to become the "smartest person in the world," although he agrees smart doesn't mean wise. Apart from the sheer pleasure of scaling a major intellectual mountain, Jacobs figured reading the encyclopedia from beginning to end would fill some gaps in his formal education and greatly increase his "quirkiness factor." Reading alphabetically through whole topics he never knew existed meant he'd accumulate huge quantities of trivia to insert into conversations with unsuspecting victims. As his wife shunned him and cocktail party guests edged away, Jacobs started testing his knowledge in a hilarious series of humiliating adventures: hobnobbing at Mensa meetings, shuffling off to chess houses, trying out for the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, visiting his old prep school, even competing on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Adult/High School - When Jacobs, a pop-culture junkie and magazine editor, got a bee in his bonnet to read the entire abridged set of the Encyclopedia Britannica to stave off the decline of his recalled knowledge, his wife, family, and coworkers looked on with disbelief, amusement, and annoyance. They thought he'd give up on his quest, but fortunately he did not, for his recap manages to impart the joys of learning, along with a lot of laughs. The alphabetical arrangement of his book allows Jacobs to share highlights, many of which show his fixation on the morbid, the insane, and the grotesque in history. Cortés had syphilis. Descartes had a fetish for cross-eyed women. Throughout, the author digresses with anecdotes about such things as his trip to a Mensa meeting, his visit with Alex Trebek, and (mainly) his wife's attempts to get pregnant. While the pregnancy woes probably won't hold the same resonance with teens as with adults, they are all short, and soon there is another funny or gross item. As Jacobs wraps up, he leaves readers with the sense of satisfaction and wistfulness that often occurs when finishing a particularly satisfying book, only multiplied by the magnitude of what he has accomplished. We’re in looking glass territory here, as many reviewers spent as much time on New York Times Book Review Queenan’s hack-job as they did on Esquire editor Jacobs’s book. Reviews of reviews are always awkward, especially when they flock to the defense of a book as harmless as Jacobs’s. Maybe Know-It-All isn’t an intellectual treatise; but, then again, it isn’t meant to be. Its pop culture-obsessed author clearly is out for some fun, often at his own expense. The alphabetical structure and wisecracking prose only underscore the playfulness of The Know-It-All, even if it gets certain factoids wrong. Which begs the question: what side of the "A" volume did Queenan wake up on? One must assume the backside.

It is humorous, enlightening, and fun. If you are a trivia or reference book enthusiast than this is your comfort reading! It has hilarity and heart. And even I, a reference book junkie learned a thing or too! The narrative is pleasant and makes the effort more enjoyable than just reading about entries.

Jacobs has brought stunt authoring to the academics... or at least Jeopardy watchers! It makes you want to go back when information searching began with sifting through pages of a heavy set of leather bound books.

Light and Surprisingly Engaging Read

Did those three factual tidbits entertain you? Does the prospect of reading 400 pages of similar fare interspersed with some memoir-ish reflections and anecdotes appeal to you? If your answers are in the affirmative then you will probably enjoy The Know-It-All by A.J. Jacobs. The book chronicles Jacobs' attempt to read the complete Encyclopedia Britannica and his more-difficult task of keeping the reader interested during the whole affair. Jacobs' largely succeeds with the latter, and The Know-It-All is a worthwhile read to anyone looking for a light read instilled with plenty of trivia.

The idea was sparked out of Jacobs' wish to reengage with his intellectual side, which had been languishing a bit due to his job as a magazine editor for the likes of Entertainment Weekly and Esquire. Jacobs has found his niche in the "stunt journalism" genre, as his other books include Drop Dead Healthy (where he attempts to become the healthiest human ever in a highly readable and engaging fashion) and The Year of Living Biblically (where he attempts to become the most Biblical human ever I guess, I haven't read that one yet). Reading the encyclopedia (when some skimming is inevitable) clearly is a bit pedestrian in comparison in terms of total commitment and strenuousness. Realizing this, Jacobs doesn't really focus much on the physical act of reading the volume, though he does mention several times that it is often incredibly boring and repetitive. Instead, the book is largely a vehicle for Jacobs to riff on some fun facts he encounters, pursue some semi-relevant intellectual activities like attending Mensa meetings and playing chess, and reflecting a bit on the nature of intelligence and knowledge with some more personal passages.

The book is organized in a slightly unorthodox fashion. Every chapter covers a letter, and Jacobs recounts his efforts from a-ak (a genre of Korean court music) to Zywiec (a small town of 32,000 in Poland). Each chapter is further divided into individual entries, where Jacobs cultivates several usually fascinating factual morsels, such as the three that kicked off this review. There is never any drama regarding whether he will actually finish the book, which is appreciated given that he could really just have skimmed everything and we would be none the wiser. It's not like we the collective reading public were going to quiz him at the end or something. The format is mainly a success, as it still provides Jacobs with the freedom to tangentially relate particular entries to stories from his past or some of his scholarly field trips undertaken during his quest.

Tackling the Britannica, and describing how one goes about such an endeavor, is something that could easily fail in the hands of the wrong writer. Thankfully, Jacobs does a pretty commendable job of maintaining interest. Like Drop Dead Healthy, Jacobs and his immediate family and friends are featured prominently and these segments that focus on the author's attempts to one-up his intellectual brother-in-law help keep the book from becoming a mere list of random trivia. The Mensa meetings, school visits, and chess games also break up the monotony, though some asides such as Jacobs' appearance on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (the book was published in 2004 when the show had already passed any shreds of cultural relevance or importance) fell a bit flat. But overall Jacobs does an excellent job touring the reader through the highlights of the Britannica and the prose is snappy, light, and self-effacing, something he has likely perfected through a career in magazines. While the book is facetiously titled and Jacobs often makes light of his deteriorating levels of "useful" knowledge, he does let his more highbrow and Ivy League education show during some clever and legitimately funny sections. I felt that the book lost some steam near the end but that it was ultimately an engaging mix of memoir and trivia, in a very similar vein to Drop Dead Healthy, which I also recommend.

If you are looking for some light reading and enjoy historical facts with some anecdotes and riffs on pop culture thrown in for good measure then you can certainly do worse than A.J. Jacobs' amusing and even sometimes witty The Know-It-All.

Really, he read the entire encyclopedia.

Very entertaining. A humorous account of a professional writer's pursuit of his goal of reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, his wife's tolerance of his objective and progress, and of his family's, friend's and co-workers endorsement and skepticism. Author offers both humorous and profound insights as he works through 22 volumes, 33 thousand pages in his attempt to absorb the entire corpus of human knowledge according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Many laugh-out-loud moments in this book.

About the Author
Vojin Raznatovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia in 1983. His family moved to Athens, Greece when he was ten years old. He graduated from High School in 2001, where he was a class president. He completed his B.A. in History from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he was a Dean’s List student. He holds a great passion for acting, singing, boxing and surfing. His next novel, The Serbian Dream, is due in late 2014. He lives in California.

I bought it just for the sake of reading a biography, but became so intrigued I had to finish the whole book within 2 hours!

Kudos to the author! A great insight on one of the darkest figures of the Yugoslav wars. It was quite interesting reading about the intimate life of this notorious warlord (no need mention here just how feared he was across the Balkans), yet we discover the other side of his persona that was never present in the media. The book is quite of a page turner, I could not put it down until i read the whole thing. I am surprised they still haven't made a feature film about Arkan.
I must confess I have quite a few questions that had risen in my mind upon completing this new read. Needless to say, I highly recommend it to anyone who followed the course of the Yugoslav wars or the recent Balkan history.

Good read check it out

I found this book very interesting. It is not a biography but rather a series of short chapters consisting of stories told by Zeljko Raznatovic or associates to his son or father son moments over the course of a boy's adolescence. The book is far cry from the typical English language accounts of who Arkan was. Most of these stories relate to family in some way. That being said, the book has a fascinating account of the events leading up to the infamous Red Star Dinamo riot. This story alone warrants the purchase of the book. I felt that it was a fast and informative read and suggest it to anyone interested in Serbian military history.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is very easy to follow the author. I strongly recommend it. This is an historic event from a point of view of a relative which make this book interesting and emotional.

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book. The English countryside setting, the backdrop of the 2012 London Paralympic Games, and a blind guy character who's actually nice, not bitter and angry, all seemed promising, and the prose styling is pretty good. So then it was even more of a disappointment to find the plot and characters so poorly realized.

One major problem is that it takes Olivia about 2/3 of the way through the book to realize that Zac is blind, even though it is completely obvious from the title, the summary, and the first moment he appears. Dragging it out so long made for a frustrating reading experience, and made Olivia seem colossally stupid. It's also completely unrealistic that Olivia would not notice. Maybe the first time they meet, ok, I could buy that. But after she talks to him in the pub and goes back to his house, no way.

There are so many inaccuracies in the way Zac is depicted. He's constantly described as looking right at her and expressing emotions through his eyes. He never ever uses a cane, and his guide dog does not have a harness, only a leash (two more reasons it would be impossible for Olivia not to realize he's blind). It's mentioned several times that he doesn't own a TV--blind people do watch TV! The description of how he runs is also way off. He only runs with a guide sometimes? He "visualizes the finish line"? He claims to be able to taste colors--what? Maybe that was meant as a joke but it's hard to tell. It's obvious the author has never met a blind person, or done any research about blindness or blind events in the Paralympics.

Those inaccuracies might have been bearable if the characters were at all appealing, but they aren't. Olivia is a Bridget Jones type: clumsy, unpolished, and prone to jumping to conclusions. But she lacks the self-awareness that makes Bridget Jones charming; instead she just comes off as a shallow social climber. She's mainly interested in Zac for his looks, but dismisses him as "fey" "unambitious" and "sensitive." Nothing but perfection and manliness will do for her. So how is she going to accept a disabled partner? His friend basically tells Olivia to take pity on Zac because he is blind, and she holds all the cards because she is sighted.

And Zac is even more lacking in development. It is not at all clear why he falls in love with her. After talking with her for half an hour, suddenly she's his soul mate. Yeah, I would be running away too. This is a novella, so there isn't a lot of space for their relationship to develop, but there has to be something, some reason he is attracted to her. But no, she's rude and insensitive, so why does he like her? He tells her that she inspires him to be more giving. I guess coaching kids in disabled sports and being a top Paralympic hopeful can't compare to the selflessness and world-changing potential of owning your own chocolate boutique in a small but wealthy village.

There is great potential for a romance novel about the Paralympics, but sadly, this isn't it.

A light, fun, and sweet read

Oliva is ready for some time away from London, so she leaps at the chance to dog sit for a friend in the village of Chapel Hill. Her friend tries to mention the cute boy who lives down the road, but Olivia is off men and not interested in hearing about him. When Oliva does meet Zac, he comes across as gorgeous, but creepy. There's something odd about him that she just can't put her finger on and by the time she realizes what it really is, she's already knocked him out with a teacup to his head.

The writing is great: it's charming and sweet. Olivia is endearing and easy to relate to. A lot of the characters around Chapel Hill are hilarious. It makes me want to pack up and move to a little English village!

The only trouble I had with this book is one element that stretches credibility beyond the breaking point for me personally. The author wants to keep the reader as much in the dark as Oliva, hence the very vague and unhelpful book description, so this is a bit of a spoiler. DON'T READ ON if you don't want to know!

{Olivia does not realize that Zac is blind. How is that possible? I don't know. I can't really imagine any way in which this could ever happen in real life. The first time they meet he isn't wearing sunglasses or anything. They even go on a lengthy date and she never figures it out (well, it felt lengthy to me, but I have a hard time imagining that you could spend thirty seconds with a blind man and not know it. I could be wrong. Perhaps there are people who would not figure that out, but it's just very difficult for me to buy that). She describes his eyes as looking into hers at times, but I don't think it could ever appear as though he were focusing on her eyes. But that's the entire tension in the story, so without that conceit there is no plot.}

Overall, I enjoyed this story and I will be reading more from this author!

I was getting into the story and getting to know and care about the characters when the story ended. I was enjoying the setting and the author's love of the English countryside.
Please add some more chapters when you can ?
