About the Author

William Morris (1834-1896) was an accomplished writer, textile designer and artist. A utopian socialist, he was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Craft Movement, and was a founding member of the Socialist League in Britain. Greatly influenced by the medieval period, Morris helped establish the modern fantasy genre though his works The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems, A Dream of John Ball, and The Well at the World s End. Authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were greatly influenced by works like The House of the Wolfings, The Roots of the Mountains, and The Wood Beyond the World. Morris was also an accomplished publisher, founding the Kelmscott Press in 1891, whose 1896 edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer is considered a masterpiece of book design.

Unique even amongst unique books

THE WELL AT THE WORLD'S END is the place to start for William Morris novels, but after that, if you want more, you might check out his other "W" books, THE WOOD BEYOND THE WORLD and this one. WATER's story doesn't go from A to B, but rather A to B to C to D... In other words, it's episodic, though each episode leads to the next. The heroine, Birdalone, is a feminist roll-model, which is shocking in a Victorian novel; she's physically strong, intelligent, authoritative, good and kind. I can't think of another Victorian novel heroine who is all those things(three out of four, yes, but not all). Also, there is plain talk of sex; nothing R-rated, just PG-13, but very rare in Victorian literature. The point is that this is a unique book, even as unique books go. Plus, Morris's prose is practically poetry, and he's a master of details for characters and settings, never saying too much or little, which strikes a perfect balance between realism and mythicalness.

wonderful tale of strong women in dire straits

what must it have been like to have been a powerful, independent woman and to have read this epic fantasy in 1895, the year of its publication, twenty five years before women were given the vote in America? this epic of powerful, able females (and the bonds of friendship which both bind and conflict them) is far more than a melodrama of its day, and William Morris was a visionary in his portrayal of, and obvious admiration for, strong women. Every bit as good as THE WELL AT THE WORLD'S END...with great women baddies, as well, and kind, generous, and faithful men....check it out!

Golden, beautiful, and psychologically complex

While perhaps not as well-known as William Morris' other great fantasy novels -- "The Wood Beyond the World" & "The Well at the World's End" -- this one is every much their equal. Indeed, in some ways it's their better, in that it offers his richest & most compelling portraits of Woman, both as mythical & archetypal figures, and as individual, three-dimensional human beings. As with his other novels, there's an awareness of & appreciation for female sexuality & wisdom; but in these pages, Morris really explores these aspects in subtle & illuminating ways. No doubt mild by contemporary standards, it was shocking & revolutionary in Victorian times. And even now there is much that an intelligent reader, jaded by contemporary graphic excess, can learn from Morris. He's never didactic, mind you! But in the telling of his multi-layered story, he has much to say about the female wortld & psyche, and the paths of individuation women might take toward become whole.

The telling of the story, of course, is a pleasure in itself. Morris had mastered a clear, lyrical prose that had just the right amount of archaic shading, without ever tumbling into the plodding & turgid. His skill as a poet is apparent on every page. Starting with the simple, evocative name of Birdalone for his heroine, he displays his talent as a writer: strength & precision, applied with a jeweler's touch. Again, as with all his novels, no matter what's happening on a larger scale around his characters, the individual stories are what matter most. The quest in this case is very personal & intimate, and its rewards far greater than thrones & worldly power. There's a distinctly Jungian reading to be made of Morris' work, which makes it very contemporary after all.

The novel is available in many editions these days, but I'm reviewing the old Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series printing out of a longtime love for it. This was my introduction to William Morris, and I'll always associate him with the Lin Carter introductions & the gorgeous Garvasio Gallardo covers. But in any edition, it's most highly recommended!

European book, outdated, misleading on health

Mosslachers book on chinchillas is very good in its pictures and general information. In the areas of nutrition and care, however, it is misleading in some areas. It recommends products that cannot be found in the United States and has caused many US owners trying to find the product problems.
Its chapter on diseases does not go far enough and does not discuss more than just a few basics. It states that rabbit pellets are "fortified with hormones" [p31] which in the US is not true, and rabbit pellets are ok for chins in this country. It also recommends vinegar in the water to get the animal to drink more, something which is not only not necessary, but unsubstantiated as a problem with chins.

Chinchilla crazed

This is a great book for detail and references. I started with 3 chinchillas and now have 11. They are all healthy and have sold some. If you really want to know everything you can about chins, or breeding the right way like I did, then this is the right book for you.

Still the Best Bang for Your Buck in IV Drug References

In regards to the Kindle edition:
1) They fixed the equation formatting errors present in the 2014 edition
2) There is an alphabetical by generic name contents that makes it a breeze to find the drug information quickly.

In regards to the text itself, I have found no better value intravenous drug reference available. There are drug references that go into more detail on drug compatibility (Trissel's Guide or King's Guide), but there are far more expensive and completely lacking in the day-to-day, need-to-know front-line information. This book concisely tells common uses for the drug, how to mix, how to administer, compatibility, stability and much more.

This book was not required for school but we had these in our skills lab. I purchased one so I could prepare for our simulations by making drug cards ahead of time.
This helped me out greatly during clinicals too because we started doing IV Push meds in 3rd semester and we needed to know more info than what Davis's Drug Guide had; like rate of administration.
This is worth the investment! Also, it has a great section on abbreviations so you can look those up quickly and not feel like a dummy.
Sure, there are online iv drug guides but I like to highlight and my instructor wants you looking them up in the book. I liked having my highlighted notes in my book as opposed to the non-highlighted IV Drug Guides in the hospital med room.
Also, I wrote my name on the page edges (with book closed if you know what I mean) so that my book doesn't get lost. I also tab the commonly used drugs (and drugs my patient is on) so I can find them easily.

Suggested read for everyone. It wont be an easy or fun one though.

I wanted to learn about different theories of rejection so I bought the Kindle version of this book.

In the book it contains many different aspects of rejection, a lot of which I hadn't even thought qualified as rejection but I did still appreciate the wide variety of topics. I would suggest this for most people as a great tool for self-reflection.

I will warn readers that at times, I became bored with this book and found that I had to push myself to continue reading because it seems so jumbled together with no clear rhyme or reason for switching topics. Frequently, I couldn't resist thinking, "are we still talking about rejection?"

Still, it's a recommended read as I learned a lot of things I didn't know.
