About the Author

Entering college as a classical guitar major, Erich changed his major 3 years later to music business when he moved to Nashville Tennessee and graduated from Belmont University. Erich began teaching in high school and continued throughout college because of his love of the instrument and his passion for helping people. Throughout nearly 3 decades of teaching and study, he has discovered and simplified methods for mastering technique and theory from the perspective of the learning student, NOT from the perspective of the frustrated teacher. Erich has taught millions of players around the world that once thought they were unteachable. He still teaches one-on-one lessons, writes books about music, loves to travel, do yoga, enjoys the outdoors and is a big supporter of animal welfare.

Excellent

There is A LOT of information available on the Internet about learning to play guitar. Two years ago I decided to re-start learning to play (to entertain myself) after being away from guitar for more than 35 years. I found, after trial and error a couple of online teachers I really like.
A few weeks ago I found Erich's website when I was looking for some country styles. I had been concentrating on blues prior to that. I liked his YouTube videos so I bought a couple of his modules. They were, well ... ok. As I said, I had found a couple of REALLY good blues teachers.
So, when he announced this book I was a bit skeptical. But, I thought I would at least check it out for $3.99.
I kind of speed read through it and I am AMAZED! He has done an awesome job on this book. Not only the book. There is a ton of supplementary videos and other resources linked to just where you need them in this book.
I HIGHLY encourage anyone just starting out to get this book now. For beginners like myself that have already gotten a head start, it has some good info in it too. More advanced players may not find it useful.

A "Feel-Good" Book with Scanty, Misleading Information

This book contains many gaps in teaching the basics, thus could even be a setback to beginners. Its author is strong on encouragement, but unrealistic about the basics of performance.
Seeing the great number of positive reviews on Amazon for this book, I ordered it, and hoped to pick up some pointers, but unfortunately, I was incorrect. One apparent reason for the many positive reviews and the author's claim it is the "#1 Amazon bestseller" (quite unlikely since it's been available only for a few months and is gotten mainly through mail, not at music stores) is his frequent pleading to the reader---SIX times through the book's pages---to click on the website given to email positive reviews for posting on Amazon.
But to the specific problems in the book's content:
1. The book's exercises are all drill, with nary a single song given to practice them. One learns guitar techniques and learns to enjoy the guitar mainly by playing songs. This is a serious flaw.
2. He omits many basics, the exclusion of which can get beginners practicing incorrectly, leading to even more difficulty in unlearning those errors later, e.g., chord changing, the kinds of strings and how to put them on, etc. The book purportedly is for both acoustic and electric guitarists, but he says virtually nothing about the latter, for instance, the use of power chords. On the other hand, he will sometimes go into excessive complexity for beginners to sort through, e.g., listing dozens of fingerpicking patterns, rather than giving a few most useful and versatile ones.
3. He develops unrealistic expectations about practice and proficiency. Note the book's subtitle: "How anyone can quickly become a strumming, chords, and lead guitar ninja." That definitely won't happen with the partial skills imparted here. In dozens of pages, Andreas repeatedly states that the quantity of practice is much more important than innate talent. This advice will bring relief to many unconfident students of the guitar. But missing is practical advice on HOW to practice, for instance, practicing regularly every day, if only for 10 minutes, playing a piece very slowly, not up to tempo, until you can play it error-free.
4. The book is oddly organized, ending in not an index, but a plea for "A Cause Close to My Heart"---animal welfare! This self-published book desperately needed a good editor.
There are many superior guitar instructional books out there. One I've especially liked and learned from is The Complete Guitar Player, by Russ Shipton, which includes accompanying CDs.

Guitar Mastery Simplified - a newbie perspective

Usually, students want to start their guitar training by playing a simple song and working up from there. Back in the day, I tried that, too. I got frustrated, and put it away for many years. A few years ago, I took lessons from a very accomplished classical guitarist. Most of his students were in Junior High or High school, and his method may have worked well for that age group, but I am over 60 years old now.
My frustration in the past was that I had no finger strength, little flexibility, and small hands.
This course starts with basics like posture, anatomy of the guitar and the usual basics, like tuning, etc., but quickly moves to dexterity drills and other exercises to increase strength and reach -- the things needed to play any style of music on the guitar. I have been practicing the exercises, and already feel like I am further along than I was with the expensive lessons.
He also started with 3 basics of left hand mechanics: use finger TIPS to fret, fret just behind the fret, and keep some room between the neck and the palm of the left hand. Using those three tips, I have already improved.
I skimmed over the rest of the book because it quickly gets into material I am not ready for. I want the music theory, chord progressions and it is all there when I am ready for it. There is depth to this material, so I will be using it for quite a while.
This is an excellent book, with lots of encouragement from the author for the student. He has solid advice for everything except what to do about my small hands! I recommend this book for beginning to intermediate guitar students. There is a lot of material for advanced students, but I don't feel qualified to express an opinion on that material at this time.
