A superb primary text perfect for self-directed study

From the stylings of pre-Socratic thinkers to the work of Plato and Aristotle, to an overview of more modern philosophers such as Descartes, Nietzsche, Kant, and Hegel, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy touches upon the quandaries that have hounded thinkers throughout history: the existence of God, the meaning of life, human nature, and the question of what true freedom is. "If not all acts are free in the same way, should freedom itself depend on the degree of enlightenment it brings? Or is every man essentially free in so far as he is a man? If this is the case, we must not simply identify the capacity for being free with the enactment of freedom. We still don't know how freedom can be made concrete in the world." Accessible to readers of all backgrounds, A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy is a superb primary text perfect for self-directed study.

Surprisingly, this works.

As someone who has devoted four decades of his adult life to either teaching or studying philosophy (or both), I was skeptical when a publisher sent me this little book entitled "A Beginner's Guide to Philosophy." How could anyone provide an adequate overview of philosophy in 30 short snippets that come to just over 100 pages of text?

When I began reading I soon discovered that Dominique Janicaud had done precisely that. Written originally for his 20-year-old daughter (and translated into English by Lisabeth During), "A Beginner's Guide" truly lays the foundation for reasoning philosophically and shows why this is important. Along the way Janicaud briefly describes some of the main ideas of philosophers as diverse as Socrates, Heraclitus, Aristotle, Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Heidegger. Needless to say, in such a short book, there are some important figures that have gone missing, such as Aquinas and Wittgenstein. But the reader will come away from this book with at least a glimpse into what some major philosophers have thought and why they have thought the way they have.

However, what is most beneficial in this book is not the philosophical date it provides (which is admittedly sketchy) but the love for philosophy that shines through and the raising of the questions that philosophers have asked since the time of the ancient Greeks (as well as why these questions are truly important). If this book inculcates a love of philosophical thought and a desire to learn more in one individual, it will have been worth the effort.

Gracefully and pleasantly written, I didn't think this book said much.It's not really an introduction to philosophy.It's a meditation of sorts by the author on why philosophy matters .I enjoyed some of his comments on the impenetrable ( for me) Hegel.If you read this you will probably enjoy it.However if you don't , you aren't missing much.

A good ight reading

It is a good light novel which takes you back to your younger days! Try to read it for the sake of a youthful nostalgia! The setting is typically Indian and the author emotes very well as an Indian youth. The author's style of story telling is flowing and his language is befitting the style. The story has its periodic surprises and shocks which makes it an interesting reading. However, towards the end it drags a bit.

If you enjoy reading something youthful, don's miss this novel. However, I don't really know if the novel will appeal to the international reader as the issues are basically Indian by nature.

This is one of the novels which can be described as unpredictable. It's full of romance. You will enjoy it till the end. But some characters lack the depth and female antagonist character seems confusing which makes it good for one time read.

Lots of typos, redundant, and even with the ...

Lots of typos, redundant, and even with the [overly] excessive examples, often it's unclear what is being said. Also, sentences would break off in the middle and start on a sentence from three pages ago. However, I did use the kindle version, so not sure whether some problems were to do with the book or the kindle app.

The book gives a great foundational look at Sociology. Its chapters flow between the different parts well. From the capstone of the Sociological Imagination at the beginning to the roof top of modern social theorists like Ritzer, the book was comfortable to learn from. Glad I purchased it.

I really enjoyed this book. Burns and Kick give a well balanced introduction to Sociology. They have a wide range of information that shows great thought, time and heart put into its pages. It starts with the sociological imagination and then goes into concepts of socialization and other aspects that are core to how we work and behave together.

Packed with knowledge and insight, Burns and Kick pepper it throughout with great examples to help bring the information to life for the reader. They thoroughly cover theories from micro, meso and macro levels and then go on to institutions. Ritzer’s McDonaldization, post-modernism, chaos and complexity theories provided food for thought! It really made me challenge my ideas on how we have become the modern and post-modern society that we are today.

Foundations of Social Understanding is a wonderful book that leaves one feeling like they gained more than just a framework for future classes. It provides readers with a sure foundation to build their future knowledge while moving forward with their thinking. The concepts discussed throughout the book challenge the reader’s perceptions and how they view the world around them. It was very rigorous, but I will be recommending this course and book to other people I know.

I was not sure what to expect from a beginning seller, especially since I've never bought from an independent Amazon seller. However, I am pleased with my bargain. I believe the condition of the book was the only information that was given. I was not sure what to expect as other copies being sold described the condition of the cover, binding, pages, and writing or lack thereof. As it was the only book without these features I didn't want I decided to buy it and hope for the best. The main thing I was hoping for is that the binding was in tact. When it arrived I was happy to find the binding was secure. I have found some writing/highlighting, a sticker on the spine, and the "B" in "Beyond" in the title was torn off, but I don't mind. For the price, I'm content with my purchase.

A decent math book

I needed this textbook for a 6-week summer math class. 3 weeks into the class, there are very few negative things I could say about this book. One would be this: the book doesn't explain some of the topics as thoroughly as say, an algebra or geometry textbook does. While I've found some of those textbooks to have almost too much explanation in them, this textbook, in my opinion, didn't have quite enough. Overall though, I needed an inexpensive used book for a short class, and that's what I got. I'm happy with it.

Potatoes are awesome

This is a simply amazing story of love, compassion, and potatoes. I thought I knew everything about potatoes but I was wrong. My children beg me to read more about potatoes every night before bed. Since reading this book I have bought over 600 tons of potatoes. Thank you for this wonderful and inspiring book :)

Very scholarly and extremely interesting. The roots (no pun intended) of modern civilization have
more to do with the potato than I could ever have imagined. The South American historical speculations
are riveting and with the more recent archeological discoveries in that part of the world this book's
relevance is more fascinating now than when it was written some 50 or so years ago. A classic in every
sense of the word.

This book examines the archaeological implications of Islam as a force which can act upon all areas of life. Islam leaves distinctive material culture remains and distinctive categories of evidence which can be detected and described.

The subject and the geographical area of Islam is vast. The author provides an assessment of the means and the methods of uncovering Islamic material records in the context of a wide range of times and places. Separate chapters examine the mosque, the domestic environment, the Islamic city, death and burial, art, manufacturing and trade. The author draws evidence from the perceived heartlands of the Islamic world (Arabia, the Near East), and from those regions traditionally regarded as the periphery (Africa and the Far East). Coverage extends from the origins of Islam in the seventh century AD up until the present.

About the Author
Timothy Insoll is currently a Research Fellow in Archaeology at St John's College, Cambridge. From January 1999 he has been appointed a lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Manchester. He has conducted fieldwork in Mali, Eritrea, India, Uganda, Turkey and the UK. He has published numerous papers in academic journals, and one of his most recent publications, a monograph, is Islam, Archaeology and History: The Gao Region, Mali.

Demonstrates the variety of Muslim cultures

Can archeologists draw conclusions about whole societies? The discipline of social archeology says they can, and Insoll proves it in the case of Islam. His goal is not only to demonstrate the richness and variety of the material culture of Muslim societies-he refers to a satisfactorily wide range of times and places in doing so-but also to interpret material culture and connect it convincingly to social characteristics. Islam itself structures his book, each chapter begin-ning with an epigraph from the Qur'an that sets the theme. Thus the obligation of prayer is made archeologically concrete in the structure of the mosque, the importance of privacy shapes the excavatable spaces of domestic structures, and dietary requirements affect the food remains and the building types the archeologist may find.

Interesting 'social archeology' of Islamic history

Archeology of Islam

Timothy Insoll in eight chapters surveys studies of Islamic Archeology to ascertain what potential there is for learning more from existing and future digs and research.

Unlike the "faux Islam" of Orientalists who presume to generalize about an essence from mostly literature, linguistics, and classic studies, he looks at the material evidence of Mosques, domestic Environment, Death and Burial sites, Community Environment and spaces as well as material and spatial lessons about Muslim Life and `Art, Trade, and Ideas' to find variations on common themes, local adaptation, purposeful evolution and development. Space, time, change, local adaptation all have legitimate and important roles that make many generalities, however useful to simplify or sometimes demonize, seem terribly naïve.

There are interesting bits and observations for the student of Islamic history and cultures with observations about such things as how Hui Chinese gravestones in coastal China used both Arabic and Chinese perhaps to be Muslim without denying their Chinese place while in Java Arabic quite sufficed perhaps because Islam felt less threatened by a dominant civilization. The examples can be interesting; the speculations are designed to make one think and open directions for further study.

Examples are from the entire period of Islamic history and may be of interest to many students of Muslim Civilization.

Strong hands.... Strong enough to split rails for a fence, and wrestle two men at a time, and pull 36 states back together.... Big hands and a big heart." Lewin's (Peppe the Lamplighter) realistic watercolor portraits bring the youngster and his changing emotions into close focus, while rough background sketches render the former president. The juxtaposition of these elements simultaneously conveys the feel of two distinct eras and reinforces the parallels stressed in the text. Borden's (Good Luck, Mrs. K.!) use of body type to link the boy and his hero gives her inspirational story a fresh, child-geared slant, and her descriptions of Lincoln are often poetic and pertinent. Grade 1-3-A young boy whose birthday falls on February 12th develops an interest in and an affinity for Abraham Lincoln. In poetic language, he notes the similarities between himself and his hero. Lincoln was tall for his age, skinny, and gawky, and so is he. If Lincoln could go on to greatness, then there is hope for him. Through the boy's reflections, readers will learn something about the nature of our 16th president. If at times the narrator's interest seems to border disquietingly on obsession, it does help see him through some teasing at school. Borden's text flows nicely, creating imagery of the physical presence of the man. Lewin's distinctive watercolors lend style and substance to the book, producing a treat for the eyes. A story that's likely to spark discussion about heroes and role models.

A boy who shares Abraham Lincoln's birthday muses on what Lincoln means to him. He's tall and skinny and has big hands and feet, just like A. Lincoln (he didn't like to be called Abe). ``Big buttons on his coat. Big words in his heart. Big hands and big feet like mine'' the boy notes as he passes a bronze statue of Lincoln while riding the school bus. When the boy's buddies call him ``Butterfingers'' and ``Butterfeet'' because he stumbles into wet paint, his teacher tells him that Lincoln was called names such as ``gorilla'' and ``baboon.'' Lewin's illustrations are the clear, realistically modeled watercolors readers have come to expect, placed over or against black-and-white drawings of Lincoln. These images of Lincoln at different points in his life make a powerful collage, which Lewin creates with fervor. There's nothing preachy about Borden's text, which makes the boy's connection to this historical figure immediate, honest, and straightforward. Not just for children

Every so often a gift is given to a parent when reading a book for children. The gift is that moment when the book being read becomes just as interesting, charming, funny or poignant to the parent as it is to the child. I received such a gift when I read this book. In short, simple, poetic sentences the author has managed to make vivid a great man who with the passing of years has become less human and more "historic." At the same time, the young boy in the story who discovers the likenesses between Lincoln and himself is poignantly real in his embarrassment with his awkward physical self. The dead president inspires the boy, and vice-versa: the boy opens a path for us to A. Lincoln. You can buy this book for your child, but you'll be buying yourself a treat as well.
