If you're a fan of Coheed and Cambria/The Amory Wars, this is a must read. If you aren't. Maybe find something else to read.

I love the Amory Wars, the series is extremely imaginative and insane, and I'm addicted to it. However, it really does not have the best writing. Frequently the dialog is wooden, the characters do not act realistically, and there's a fair amount of cheese going on.

However, I want more Amory Wars like a heroin addict wants his next fix. I want From Fear to be passable/available so bad so I could read it, but that is just not the case.

I find that reading the books definitely enhances my experience of the music as well because the relationship between a lot of the music and the stories is itself something of a puzzle where you're trying to figure out who is singing in what part, and what part of the story this is supposed to be, etc.

The origin story of Coheed & Cambria's "The Amory Wars", "Year Of The Black Rainbow" is an accomplished story of revenge and intrigue. Action packed and well worth your time. Co-written by Coheed frontman Claudio Sanchez and comic legend Peter David. Check this book out if you're a fan of Coheed & Cambria or just awesome sci-fi in general.

"The story takes place among the worlds of Heaven's Fence, a fictional system of 78 planets held together by a mysterious energy called the Keywork (the "Keywork" symbol is a common mark for the band as well). The planets are populated by humans and are ruled over by twelve mages who posses superhuman powers. Another race also exists, the Prise, who are blue-skinned winged females that serve God as the guardians of His words. When one mage, Wilhelm Ryan, destroys the others through force and treachery and takes on the title Supreme Tri-Mage, Heaven's Fence finds itself in grave danger. The story focuses primarily on the efforts of Doctor Leonard Hohenberger to create a team of three biologically engineered androids, Coheed, Cambria and Inferno to fight against Ryan and his Red Army.

The novel is a great read and one comes to appreciate Peter David's efforts to make it into a legitimate work of fiction. For being an action novel, it really has a lot of depth to it and manages to build up a fine array of emotions. Overall, the book has a very dark feeling to it and sometimes it felt as if the heartache was never going to let up. In the end though, it was satisfying and left me wanting to know the next chapter in the saga.

Probably the most compelling aspect of the novel was its ability to incorporate such tough issues as religion, cloning, abuse, genocide and tyranny, among others. It reminded me that, despite the science fiction background of the story, Year of the Black Rainbow presents problems that are very much a reality to our own society."

Quite simply, a 'must'

First published in 1988, it's the primary reference for amateur and professional bat researchers alike, and this edition packs in many new, commonly used field and lab techniques used to advance the study of bats. Quite simply, a 'must'.

Thorough and comprehensive resource

This book is an invaluable resource for those who are designing studies or conducting fieldwork on bats. To my knowledge, there is nothing else out there like it. It is scientifically written but is still accessible to amateur bat enthusiasts who would like to learn more about techniques for studying bats.

I am so done with my day job.

I read this book hoping it would give me some tips on what to do after I turn in my notice. Turns out, not a whole lot. Goodman quit her day job without even really knowing what she wanted to do (done) or getting any kind of client base (done) or even saving a little money (not quite done, but I have come up with a budget and ways to minimize expenses), so I’m already a few steps ahead of where she was.

That said, I still highly recommend this book. If nothing else, it’s very amusing, as well as informational. Goodman has a great sense of humor and a conversational style that kept me reading. She also has a ton of information on how to go about quitting your job regardless of what you want to do. Thinking of starting a non-profit? This book has some excellent resources to help you get started. What if you still want a day job, you just don’t want an office job? Or you want to work from home? This book still has you covered.

Goodman knew that her path to self-employment was not the only one, so she interviewed entrepreneurial women working in all sorts of fields and included their words of wisdom in this book. The result is a wealth of information that Goodman sprinkles throughout the book, rather than leaving it compacted in one interview section. Each chapter contains quotes and advice from women doing whatever you want to do, and I think Goodman did a pretty good job of covering all her bases. From self-employment, to volunteering, to working travel into your budget and schedule, to just spending more time doing what you love. She has advice on how to go about easing yourself out of the 9-to-5 lifestyle and into the kind of life you want.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to change up their work schedule. It left me more knowledgeable about what I’m about to do, more confident, and entertained me the whole way through.

Drawing from her years as a freelancer, Goodman suggests practical, step-by-step changes one can make over time so that a transition to the entrepreneurial life doesn't lead you back to your parents' couch. Particularly salient in our troubled economy, The Anti 9 to 5 Guide should be consulted by anyone contemplating "life outside the cube."

Analysis

Goodman begins by relating how she began freelancing. She was tired of the hours she spent in a cubicle, staring at a computer, doing work that gave her no satisfaction. So she quit. However, bills still come to those pursuing their dreams, and Goodman acquired a nice chunk of credit card debt as she built her now-successful freelancing career. The advice that she offers in her book is meant for like-minded women to experience similar success without the pitfalls Goodman discovered.

Goodman advises getting your feet wet in your hobby-job before diving in headfirst--particularly if you have a mate, children, or pets that depend on you for food and shelter. She approaches broad topics such as figuring out what exactly you want to do; breaking into that industry; and making the time in your daily life to do so. She then explains the finer nuances of moving toward your dream: asking for a flexible work schedule at your 9-to-5; working from home; running your own business; pursuing activities that are meaningful both professionally and personally; and pursuing an unconventional or male-dominated career.

At every step of the way, Goodman offers practical tips to maneuvering the technical details of launching an unconventional career (taxes, legal matters, wages--you know, the little things). At the end of each chapter, she also presents you with a checklist for conquering that lesson in small steps. Rather than trying to impose her own idea of a timeline, she suggests that you set goals that are achievable and comfortable for you. Plunging into the world of an alternative career is hard enough, and you need to do it at your own pace.

The book offers easy, step-by-step advice for stepping out of your daily routine to try out new careers that may make you happy without making you go broke. Goodman advises that you establish your new business on the side first. Though that eats into your personal time, it also allows you to keep a paying gig--and if this is a job that you truly love, the sacrifice will not seem so great. If, after several months, your new career makes you happy and begins to pay the bills, then you are free to take the next step, whatever that may be.

One of the most valuable aspects of the book is that it takes seriously the idea that not all were built for performance reviews and public transportation, and it acknowledges that everyone's dream--and how they attain it--will be different. Goodman offers advice as varied as the careers that women dream of while staying relevant. Though she discusses potential pitfalls of many unconventional careers, such as what to do at about harassment at your male-centric job, her advice to do research first and to keep a cool head is applicable in any career path. Short and sweet appendices include guides to negotiating pay; temping; setting up a business; and an exhaustive list to resources on nearly any obstacle you will face.

I would recommend this book to anyone (not just women) contemplating a career outside of the norm. After reading this book, I realized that though the freelance work I was doing was bringing in good money, it was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I was putting my true dream on the shelf by filling my time with freelance work I thought liked because it paid well, not because I enjoyed it. Goodman's advice to take slow steps that will have a minimal impact on your income was particularly relevant to me; if I'd quit my job immediately to pursue that freelance work, I would have found myself stuck in another unhappy career. However, by taking it slow and looking at all the angles of your dream, you will reduce your risk and maximize your returns--a solid business model no matter which career you choose!

Advice directed toward all manner of outside-the-box 9 to 5ers. Some I had already come to conclusion of on my own, but she offers key insights only driven from experience. A great choice if you're just starting out in this direction or starting to have thoughts of doing so!

Needs Proofing!

I'm a big fan of Bill Hammack's. His "Eight Amazing Engineering Stories" book is excellent and highly informative. I've watched, I believe, every Engineer Guy video on YouTube.
But this book was disappointing. Someone should have proofed this book - there are far too many glaring typos for comfort - I presume he wrote these radio scripts on a word processor back in the day, and they just got reprinted without reviewing them. The stories are mostly interesting.

Great short stories that don't waste words

I bought this book after watching all the "engineerguyvideo's channel" videos on youtube. At under $4 (Kindle version) it was pretty much free in my mind.

- It is a collection of dozens of short stories from radio commentaries by the author. They are all under two pages long and packed with info, not fluff.
- It is often a touching look into the lives of people who have created the things we use everyday and often love
- I was especially impressed with his attention to women's engineering contributions. His stories about Margaret Knight and Henrietta Lacks were deeply moving.
- The writing shows a tremendous amount of compassion, knowledge of history and consistent clarity.
- Yes, there are errors. But in all but one case they are simple errors that are easy to read past. Bad writing would have been much harder to deal with. I assumed that because he wrote them for a radio show with deadlines he did not always worry so much about how it was written down. The errors did not diminish my experience but then I've read lots of worse copy.

The book reminded me a lot of my favorite documentaries by James Burke. It gave the story behind the basic things that are so obvious they are invisible. The fact that the stories are broken into chunks makes it a bit like potato chips for me; I can't read just one.

Fun Little Stories

This book is a collection of commentaries that were initially aired on NPR. I would guess the segments were a minute or two each, because none of the stories are more than two pages long. Each of them touch on some aspect of modern technology, everything from nylon to lava lamps and semiconductors.

* Since these were originally oral presentations, the language is simple, easy-to-read, and flows well. Bill Hammack injects a little bit of humor, some folksy wisdom, and a reasonable understanding of the technology he is describing. I am an engineer, and have technical interest in a lot of subjects, but I did manage to learn a few things from the book.

* Hammack is not writing a history book, so he gets to take a few liberties with facts. For example, in a chapter on the destruction of the Kingdome by explosive demolition, he notes the level of technology required to turn a football arena into a 20 foot high piles of rubble. === The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* Many of the tales, due to the length constraint, are so brief and summarized as to miss the whole point. It is really an impossible task to describe the technology and genius required to create cell phones and communications satellites in a couple hundred words, and Hammack really doesn't even try. Instead he just waves his hands and calls it difficult and amazing.

* The stories were evidently written over a period of years, and some of them do not hold up well. While the history of the typewriter is pretty much a timeless tale in the 21st century-not much innovation, other stories such as the technology of anti-terrorism were probably outdated before he finished the column. At the very least, it would have been nice to have the dates each story was written.

=== Summary ===

All things considered, (no pun intended), it was a fun book to read. There were enough interesting anecdotes to keep even a techy like myself amused, although I found myself wishing for more details in many of the chapters. Some of teh stories do not jibe with other accounts I have read- for instance I have read numerous times that engineers at Raytheon "discovered" microwaved ovens due to melted candy bars in an engineers pocket...but that is probably the nature of this type of history. Nobody wrote this stuff down, because no one thought it would ever be important. I'd recommend the book to anyone who enjoys technology and its history.
