The Little White Bird, by James Matthew Barrie

Where did Peter Pan come from? There is a very general conception that he stepped from Mr. Barrie's day-dreams straight upon the boards. But those who remember that delicate piece of sentiment, "The Little White Bird, or Adventures in Kensington Gardens" will find him already grown to his eternal youth there. In the story that the lonely old bachelor tells the boy David, Peter Pan is the same lad, whose "age is a week" and who "escaped from being human when he was seven days old; he escaped by the window and flew back to the Kensington Gardens," where, like all children, he had been a bird before he was born; and he lives in Kensington Gardens, which is the Never Never Land of "The Little White Bird."

About the Author
J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

Tantalizing
By Book Lover
Sir James Matthew Barrie (May 9, 1860 - June 19, 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best known for creating the character Peter Pan, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn-Davies boys.

Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, the second youngest of ten children, and was educated at Dumfries Academy and Edinburgh University. He became a journalist at Nottingham, then London, and became a novelist. His first novels were set in Kirriemuir, disguised as "Thrums" (his father was a weaver). Barrie often wrote dialogue in Scots. He then wrote for the theater, including Quality Street, What Every Woman Knows, and The Admirable Crichton.

His 'Thrums' novels were hugely successful when they were published, starting with Auld Licht Idylls (1888). Next came A Window in Thrums (1889) and The Little Minister (1891). His two 'Tommy' novels, Sentimental Tommy and Tommy and Grizel came in 1896 and 1902 and dealt with themes much more explicitly related to what would become Peter Pan. The first appearance of Pan came in The Little White Bird (1901). This book is significant for that reason and is a very enjoyable read.

Well, I'm a big Peter Pan fan
By M Roberts
I love the style of the writing. The author is so creative that it is as if this was written for children, when it is not. This is the first book that ever mentions the character of Peter Pan, which is why it sparked my interest, but that ended up having very little effect on my enjoyment of the book. It's funny in a very light and innocent way; it's precious.

Cheap print-on-demand edition.
By Thomas J. Busse
This is a cheap lousy print-on-demand edition. The type is not justified and there is no attention paid to layout, hyphenation, spacing., correct leading for the font size, etc. This makes it very difficult on the eyes, and you might as well read the public domain text online instead of wasting your money. There is absolutely no book design, and the "paperback" is perfect bound instead of being sewn, which meant my pages started falling out during the first reading.
