I love the book

As homeschooling mom I got this for my soon to be senior. I love the book, the details and cartoons that help to explain the concept. I bought the student workbook to go alone with it so I don't have to cover lessons or try to "teach" any thing. I also like the self-quiz or tests after each chapter that are done online then scored immediately. This is a free service and it gives a good fall back for testing and chapter knowledge. Thus far I have been impressed with the Prentice Hall books. We have the Biology book and about to do the Economics as well. Both with workbooks and online tests. They have made homeschooling high school easy yet with public school quality.

Inadequate (unless used in 8th grade or Freshman year.)

I am a private tutor who helps high school students who are having difficulty coping with physics. If used to teach freshman or 8th graders who have are taking algebra I, the book might be useful.
If used to teach at some other level, the book is inadequate, and contains too few examples. In principle, the notion is that students will understand 'concepts' without the any math. But the book does no better job explaining concepts than other approaches that include math and students who have passed algebra 1 would likely better understand the concepts if presented with some math while still retaining a 'conceptual' focus.
The teachers who do use this book invariably supplement the class with copious materials from elsewhere-- likely because they find the books content insufficient to support their learning objectives. Use of supplemental material is helpful but using this book still leaves the student with a book that does an inadequate job supplementing class notes.
The potential strength of books is they collect together material in a much more organized fashion than a series of hand outs, power points slides and student notes. Students would benefit from a better resource. I'm not sure what book would be terrific for conceptual physics. I know this book has been used for that purpose for years, and is very popular. but sadly, it's less than wonderful.
Oddly, the accompanying work books are ok and often used by teachers who use more detailed text books. The author's online videos are also helpful and fun to watch.

Good book

Explains concepts clearly with good diagrams and comics. Covers topics to sufficient depth and keeps the interest going. Hits all the right spots!
